Can "Es gibt" work here as well?

    Not really.

Why not? (Sorry if that's a dumb question: I just can't find a good explanation online.)

It sounds as if those people permanently lived in the park.

So "es gibt" suggests a permanent condition?

Es gibt kein Bier auf Hawaii. :(

Danke. Ich werde das merken. Und auch, das Hawaii eine traurige Stelle ist.

Shouldn't "viele Personen" work as well?

        https://www.duolingo.com/profile/wataya

Technically, yes. Practically, mostly no. "Menschen" is more idiomatic here. 'Personen' has a rather official sound. Maybe a police officer reporting to his superiors would use it.

@wataya: I put "Viele Menschen sind in dem Park." for "There are lots of people in the park." I am pretty sure it is correct. Is it? Thanks.
