My unexpected progress
Wall. And a quote or a phrase on the wall. It is in Spanish. I walked many times beside that wall. I always wondered what that sentence means.
Since I started learning Spanish I walked beside that wall four times.
The first time I understood a few words, but I haven't tried to understand it all (because I thought I didn't have enough knowledge yet).
The second time, I actually tried, but I felt like I need to study more to understand it.
The third time, I actually understood 1/3 of the sentence and I felt some kind of a pride, but, at the same time, I knew still had a lot ahead of me.
Yesterday was my fourth time and I understood it. I got a really interesting feeling in my stomach. I don't know how to describe it. I got a similar feeling when I finally learned English, but this time, it was a little bit different.
It felt like the world of languages opened to me. Like I can touch them or something. Not just languages, but all the cultures around the world and with them, I felt connected with the world and all the people in it.
Okey, maybe I got a little carried away, but that's been a wonderful experience. I hope you will get a chance to feel something similar. But, you got to keep going. So do.
P.S. For anyone wondering what the sentence was, here it is:
Es irónico como puedes hacer muchas cosas para alguien y nunca se dé cuenta, pero una vez que cometes un error, nunca lo olvida.
Are you referring to my way of expressing the experience or to a sentence that I read on the wall?
If it is the first one, thanks! :)
That's such an amazing experience, isn't it? :D
When I was first staring out Spanish, I knew how important it is to learn from the media so I wanted to listen to songs in Spanish. Problem is, I know none... I searched random songs I know and wrote "cover en espanol". (<- didn't have a spanish keyboard yet back then...)
One song I've been listening to since then & I remember when the realization first struck me: I understood the words of the chorus!!! I was so excited even though now I think back & realize that the chorus has only 5 spanish words before starting to sing in English... ._.
Right now I'm trying to figure out "Siete Años" & hopefully I'll be able to understand "Callar" (from Aladdin) because it is so difficult..
...But I'm getting there & that's what matters :)
GL with the rest of your journey! :D
There are heaps of bands singing in Spanish. And I discovered more since I started learning the language. I am not sure about the style of music you're after. If it is anything close to my tastes then try Nostra Morte (not sure why they called themselves in Italian, the band is from México), Anabantha, Mago de Oz, Amadeüs + some songs from Stream of Passion (e.g. Nostalgia). After that you get heaps of suggestions from youtube
What does that sentence mean? I don't know Spanish. PS. I had the same feeling when I was watching a Japanese anime and I was able to read and understand the title.
It's ironic how you can do nice things for people all the time and they never notice. But once you make one MISTAKE it's never forgotten.
Relates to me very well. I help many people, one mistake and we become enemies. :-[
it means this
It is ironic how you can do many things for someone and never realize, but once you make a mistake, you never forget it
I'd bet most parents, anywhere on the planet, could relate to that quote on the wall.... :)
This has inspired me to learn Spanish! I read the sentence and understood half of it, and after I translated I realized that I was actually correct. I knew that I could understand much Spanish before, probably because of hearing it at a young age and taking Latin and French, but you have really set me onto learning it! Thank you so much :D
I am very happy for you! You "broke through a wall" and you also read a wall.
It's like looking at a picture by parts and then suddenly you start seeing the whole picture. I wasn't able to understand songs in Spanish properly for a very long time, but one year later, finally I can understand the most of them and I'm still amazed by it.
(And a good quote though)
Amazing. I've been stuck to Spanish for a year and still haven't as much progress as you do ;')
You know I have started Spanish recently and what you said was a kick start to my thoughts about it. I mean, a day comes and your on the track of your dream of eloquent Spanish. Great impression.
That is so wonderful, LearnTillDeath. I could not help noticing that you are on Level 21 and can read this sentence, and I am on Level 19 and have not even come across half of these words. I could not read it, even with trying to figure it out with few the words I do recognize. Did you already know a little Spanish before starting the course? Hopefully, I will get there. : /
I have been learning Spanish for about 1 year and 2-3 months. I started with Duo and I did it for 5-6 months and then, I got bored of it (because I wasn't practicing properly) and I transitioned to some textbooks and YouTube videos. Exactly 72 days ago, I came back to Duo and I am happy to be back. So, maybe because I wasn't restricted to Duo the whole time of my studies, I understand Spanish a little bit better than you.
Anyways, just keep going and don't rush and you will get there. Good luck! :)
I love what you say about the world of languages opening up to you. Very poetic! This poster deserves a lingot. How do I do that?
At the bottom of every post you can see 'give lingot' sign.
Cool story. That’s awesome. Congrats!
I recently started learning Spanish on Duolingo because we have so many Spanish-speaking customers where I work. I’d like to exchange words with these people rather than the usual smiles and gestures! Your story has me inspired and excited to (hopefully) experience something similar to the feeling you’ve described.
Awesome! Maybe start with simple words like: 'Hola, cómo estás?' and then expand it little by little. In no time, you will speak like a champ. Good luck! :)
I'm learning english, it's not difficult, but I need effort and the formation of the sentence is different from my language (Brazilian Portuguese). For me, this quote is easy, Spanish looks Portuguese :D
Congratulations on the achievement!
I really like your approach, I think I know what you mean, it’s like holding a key to new possibilities. I’ve been learning Spanish for almost 4 weeks now, after a long hiatus in learning anything, let alone languages, and I can feel my brain really enjoying the exercise. The quote is also on point.
language learning is one of the most rewarding activities you could ever participate in.
A paraphrase of the old HAMC saying. "when we do good no one remembers, when we do bad no one forgets. "
We're hardwired for that, alas. It did get us through evolution so far though.
So now I am trying to learn Jap, but I need inspiration, I feel quite disencouraged at times, any advice?
Focus on your daily practice and don't worry about progress (it will come with practice).
Such a nice exprience! I become more motivated than before to learn spanish!
Learntilldeath, the lingot on the your next post was actually for this post the one about your learning experience. I put it on the other post because that is where I realized I could give one.
I have a similar experience but happens to me when watching Spanish shows with English subtitles. Time will come i wont need subtitles anymore
That's awesome! It's one of the best feelings hahah - I was happy that I could still understand what it said even though I haven't studied Spanish in many years
Nice example i feel same, in my case, i was surprised understanding a Rap song (isnt a joke) and was great. Is like you said, you see the world opening
''It is ironic how you can do many things for someone and never realize, but once you make a mistake, you never forget it'' this is a great quote
I have the same feeling with songs, I am happy when I can understand the lyrics of a Spanish or English song (and I am a big fan of Latin America) !
Congrats. My wow moment recently was when I woke up & realized I had dreamed speaking Spanish! I do thibk there may be an error in the Google translation posted below. While (because of the absence of personal pronouns) it says "you don't realize" & " you don't forget " I think it might be "it isn't realized" & "it isn't forgotten."
