16 New African Countries to Adopt Swahili as a Formal Language

August 30, 2019

I'm not sure I think this is good. The africans need to know English anyway to speak with non-africans. Maybe it is better to focus on one language than split the time and effort on two. But acctually I know too little about Africa to be able to really tell what is best. Interesting news though.

At least in Kenya, if you attend any competent school, you will learn English side by side with Swahili. That's starting from nursery(pre-kindergarten) too. And many have a home language too, making it 3 languages from the start.

Interesting, with Swahili having developed as a "lingua franca" for the coastal trading communities under Arab influence. IF I've understood the history correctly.
