Apartamento o departamento?

Is there a difference between these two words? They both mean apartment but is it a dialectical difference or does the difference indicate size of apartment or some other physical attribute?

From RAE:

Hi, psionpete!

I don't know how it is in other countries, but in Spain we use "apartamento" to refer to the living place, a flat.

"Departamento" has a more general meaning, as a part of something bigger (a company, a store, an administration...). It can be a part of a building, in which case, yeah, it could refer to an "apartamento". But we usually don't call it that way.

Peace!
