Ok, I have to confess that this thing has been bugging me throughout the course.

Is there an actual translation for the word 'There'?

"There are a lot of chairs in the atrium." Last I checked 'many' and 'a lot of' are synonymous.

why does 'Many chairs are in the atrium' not work? just curious.

It should work, report it. Even if I've been told that "To be" in the beginning rather mean "There is/are".
