In Dutch there are several ways to adress someone. JIJ is the most direct. Can be seen as looking at a person and pointing your finger to him. The same is with ZIJ. When you're talking with someone saying JE can sound smoother, friendlier.

But there's also something with it in the Grammer. If you would translate: I told you, then the only thing you can use is JE. When you translate: it was her! You must say ZIJ.

This should make it somewhat clearer to you.
