Question regarding a sentence with 'this' and 'that'
Hopefully I'm allowed to post this youtube link here. I'm learning how to use This and That in Russian. I don't understand her examples at 04:07. Why is she using parentheses in these 4 examples? I first thought that she added them to make it more clearer but when I translated them into google translate and some other random translation sites it changed their meanings when I removed them from the sentences.
This car is new, and that (car) is old = Эта машина новая, а та (машина) старая
This car is new, and that car is old = Эта машина новая, а эта машина старая
What am I getting wrong? Why did та turn into эта? I tried googling parentheses in russian grammar/language but didn't find anything except why they use them as smileys and such.
Thanks in advance
