Is there a different inference if one used the word, aluno or pupil inplace of estudante? In common usage is "pupil" generally associated with students who require constant direct supervision? "Estudante", a student who requires direction? "Aluno", a student who is self directing?

Aluno would be someone who needs someone to teach him/her. Estudante is a student who requires no direction... but in real life they are used interchangeably.
