You all wanted Italian short stories.
According to the DILIT site, you should look at a text and if you can immediately get the gist of it, even 10%, go for it! Read the short story 3 or 4 times, looking up a maximum of 7 words in a dictionary. Do not worry if you do not know every word; concentrate on general understanding.
However, if you are looking for a longer read, here are the names of some male and female authors (not in chronological order):
Gioscuè Carducci Grazia Deladda Luigi Pirandello Dario Fo Alba de Céspede
Maria Messina Laura di Falco
The late Isabel Quigly FRSL (d. September 2018) translated several Italian works into English, some of which will be available to order through the British library if unavailable elsewhere, if you prefer to access Italian Literature through English and maybe you are not an advanced learner or madrelingua.
Personally, I enjoy the free graded reading comprehension passages on the Lingua website , and am quite comfortable at B1.
Song lyrics are sometimes handy too.
