Struggling with basic Latin
Hi Quite new to the language, still on the first lesson. How can I tell which word for 'mother' Duo wants. If I put Mater I get marked wrong and told Mulier and when I do it the other way round I get marked wrong again and my only option for a report is if the picture does not match the word. Can those out there who know Latin better than me, help?
Not every woman is a mother.
toddler in the picture - mother (mater)
no toddler in the picture - woman (mulier, femina)
Thank you HarutoRat and ARCANA-MVSA for your explanations. I'm still wondering why Duo would expect me to know Mulier when it is not in my vocab list and it had never used the word in any part of the lesson. Still, hey ho, onward and upward. Thanks again.
Hey, sorry about the confusion, Mulier is another word for Woman. Femina is the Latin word given to you in the chapter. I'll look into why it appeared for you earlier.
Mater is the word for mother.
Mulier is a word for woman or wife, but it does not double over as mother.
If your issue is that the image you clicked on is a mother (with a child), but it says mulier, then the picture indeed does not match the word. Same if it wants you to enter mater but the child is missing from the picture. Thus the report function is fine for such an error.
