Does a boat have feelings?

This can be analyzed as something called “metonymy” which is when you substitute a noun or phrase with something it is related to. For example, I can say “The room gave him a standing ovation” and it would be understood that the people in the room gave the ovation, not the room itself. We can interpret this sentence in the same way - the people on the boat were frightened, but not the boat itself.
