Aloha e @Joel724482 , "ka mea ʻai" means "the food." "mea ʻai" = "edible stuff" more or less. Mea on itʻs own can translate to a lot of things... so think of it as meaning "thing/stuff/one/person." You will get a conceptual grasp of it over time; it is a difficult one to get coming from european languages.
