rewards are given for good behavior, not prizes. prizes are for competition

Por buena conducta is the correct. Para would be if it's given not as a reward, but as encouragement....

What is wrong with "award."

You are as wise as Solomon. Reward and award are pretty darn close. Craig.zar could probably elaborate on their subtleties.

I would say award is when the prize you gain is mostly the honor of having received it. If it is mostly something material (such as money) it is a reward.

How about prize and award?

Rewards and awards are both prizes. Prize is a more general term.
