Ahlan and Marhaban - what's the difference in usage?

Mainly, a geographic difference. Personally, as an Algerian (North Africa) I use مَرْحَباً /mar.Ha.ban/ to say welcome and أهلاً /'ah.lan/ as a formal hello. However, I know that those are used differently in other countries.
