Annoying part about duolingo arabic exercises *REALLY important* >
When I want to practise the phrases and words I've learned so far, there is no option to turn off 'letter comprehension' exercises. (By that i mean those which ask you to match the letter to the sound, etc). I already have decent knowledge of the arabic alphabet, and its really annoying to have to go through them to get a single phrase or translation activity.
Is there no option or way around it? I tried looking but can't find anything, and i feel it hinders my progress because i'd rather practise the phrases and words which i tend to forget rather than breeze through the alphabet exercises =(
They are tedious but they work. It isn't good enough to just be able to work out the sound of a word you need to be able to read it at a glance. It has taken us years to build up ease in this with our own characters and it takes work to do it for different alphabets. I would be so much better at Russian by now if that had been drilled into my head better! I can see that each time I get one of those exercises I read the words/groups of letters that bit faster and distinguish the similar characters that bit more easily. Yes it was easy to learn them the first time through but now I know them so much better. I just wish I trusted the tts more. There seem to be more inconsistencies than there were at first. I get the impression they tweaked something to fix one problem and created another, but I am not confident enough to report the mistakes. I also wish they would vary the exercises more. A repetitive sequence of tile matching exercises and nothing else is definitely not the best thing they could come up with. ButvI can't fault the effect they have had.
I disagree. One will only get used to read the letters faster once they start reading words and sentences. That's how I learned to read Russian. Endless repetition of mere letters and syllables is doing nothing more than bore one to death. It's one of the several reasons that drove me to abandon the course.
I've been studying Arabic for 10 years and am past the point where I can identify the letters at a glance. It would be beneficial if the phonetic exercises at least had meanings associated with them too, but most of them are gibberish. I'm hoping for a feature that lets me remove these exercises so that I can focus on advanced comprehension.
For speakers of languages such as English, Russian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi etc etc who use a different alphabet or script, it is very necessary to practice the Arabic letters. But for speakers of Farsi, Urdu, or other languages written with the same alphabet, it must be a bit annoying
I do agree 100%, I want to move the next step, I can write and read easily now but can merely speak a few sentences. I tried to test out from the whole tree and my surprise was it was plagued with more of those, just longer ones.
I have faith and I am still continuing, but is tearing me aprt. Other languages I am learning I can already form sentences, write and read... Lets hope it will take us somewhere decent.
It only takes me a minute to do the letter exercises, so look at it as free points. It helps me to concentrate on hearing the differences, and to vocalize them, as I can read it well enough, but for a native english speaker we have no programming to differentiate between the various T's etc, it is all just accent for our brains, not different letters, so good to work on reprogramming to hear the difference. The information package at the start of each lesson group shows why this is important, as whether the T comes from the back of the throat or the mouth makes a different word. I struggle hearing it, and while the brain knows the difference, getting the vocal cords to actually do it automatically is another question.
yes. I feel similar about it. Even though I did not know the alphabet before the Duolingo course, I find it much easier to remember the letters than the words. Or maybe it is because the letters are repeated what feels like 100 times, versus 5 times for some words in the first lessons. I have a vague memory that the translation for happy was introduced together with many repetitions of very simple letters. The letters I remember, the translation not. My suggestion: Separate lessons for alphabet versus vocabulary. If one masters the required letters, the words that need these letters can be learnt. There could also be two types of quizzes to unlock more lessons, like two pathways that may be parallel in the beginning. The letter pathway, which can be progressed completeley before going to the words pathway, or one can self-determined choose to alternate between letter and words lessons.
