I want to learn icelandic!
Dear anyone who wants to learn Icelandic,
Both of these courses are very similar to Duo and are very helpful.
I would love to learn Icelandic as well! I think it would be wonderful if they offered it - I would certainly try and learn it.
Yes!Im learning swedish and danish but i wuild love to see icelandic course!!!
Yeah I'd love Icelandic too. In the meantime that we wait, try using Memrise.com. It's very similar to Duolingo and has over 80 languages including Icelandic. Best of all, it's free! There are 3 Icelandic courses on there; a simple one, a Duolingo-style official one and one that teaches you every single Icelandic word in existence.
Simple course - https://www.memrise.com/course/351/basic-icelandic/
Duolingo-style course -https://www.memrise.com/course/134020/beginners-icelandic
Full-dictionary course - https://www.memrise.com/course/72275/first-5000-icelandic-words/
Also, to anyone who speaks Icelandic, don't be afraid to apply to the Duolingo Incubator. Just select the apply to contribute button, and when it asks you the language you wish to work on, click the last option 'add another' and write Icelandic.
Takk fyrir and happy learning.
Hi, thanks for the advice! However, hardly any of these courses have an audio function, which makes them rather less helpful ... Icelandic is by no means always spoken the way it is written, at least not to native English speakers. Or am I missing something?
Yes, the courses that I gave links to unfortunately don't have any sounds. However, I have found a great course with audio. Here it is - https://www.memrise.com/course/357011/icelandic-in-easy-stages-with-sound/. The first 10 tasks of this course just explain grammar and it starts teaching words at task 11. Hopefully this one's better.
Actually, though they do not have audio, there is a whole range of Icelandic courses, from Icelandic from A to Ö, Icelandic for Travellers to the loveliest Icelandic words. There's even a dictionary
i'm taking an icelandic course in buenos aires, argentina and would love to practice with duolingo! i find the app very useful.
I want too learn icelandic. I see, that 80Igge you are good in languages in north. When do you will find an icelandic website, say me? Now I´am learning swedish and norish, but I swedish speak now well.
I have tried out other sites to try and learn Icelandic and they just confuse me even more. Duolingo seriously needs to look into getting it on here.
I had some courses in Icelandic on livemocha few years back, visited Iceland and would like to continue to study this wonderful language
My mother is half Icelandic and half Danish. Due to when my mom moved to this country she had to assimilate and her parents no longer spoke Icelandic in the house. My family would love to learn Icelandic and be able to talk to our family members in Iceland using their native language. My siblings and I would love to teach it to our children. Icelandic would be an amazing addition to Duolingo.
Do Memrise, so much better than Duolongo, and they have several Icelandic courses. Since starting on Memrise, I can hardly be bothered with Duolingo any more, the tediousness of endless repetitions is driving me crazy. Memrise targets individual words and phrases that you are having trouble learning, it doesn't make you repeat entire sessions needlessly!! Og så burde du vel egentlig også lære dansk, ikke -.- ?!
Duolingo helps me make real progress, and I can study on the go. For this, adding icelandic is an invaluable help.
... and you already know this at level two of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish?
I already have 'Teach Yourself Icelandic' and Daisy L. Neijmann's CD courses, both of which are very good, but I want Duolingo to offer Icelandic because the format is so convenient.
I hope Icelandic gets added. Really nice language, and I want to visit Iceland someday.
Icelandic is gorgeous. I have a mug that says " Ég hef ekki hugmynd um hvað stendur á þessum bolla", and even now I have no idea what this mug says.
Since Icelandic has been very isolated over the centuries, I'd love to see it as an insight into the Nordic/Scandinavian tongues, as well as seeing more of the ace compound words for modern items instilled by language purists.
Mig langar að kaupa mig einn af þeim and I have no idea what I just said either ;)
Ég hef ekki hugmynd um hvað stendur á þessum bolla
“I have no idea what stands on this cup/what this cup says”
PLEASE MAKE AN ICELANDIC COURSE DUOLINGO!! I really hope they make the course because it's a language I have always been fascinated by.
This thread was created four years ago and the request keeps the same.
As many languages, Icelandic has a rich literature and it’s a really appealing language. It has kept many of the archaic features of the Old Norse. You can read 1000-years-old eddas and sagas while you can talk about the last technology using the same language. A remarkable feature indeed!
I´m doing the Basic Icelandic course in Memrise, but I miss the Duolingo methodology. Memrise is nice, but… Man, to find “hefur þú tekið þátt í Ráðstefnu fjöltyngdra einstaklinga?” in the first lessons can be enough for a lot of people to get away!
You're welcome. Hope it turns out to be worthwhile for you; every day I use the site along with Duolingo.
Icelandic would be GREAT to learn. If I did not already have plenty to do, I'd start learning it. It's supposed to be rather similar to Old Norse--as close as you can get nowadays--and both languages seem really worth learning. Check this out if that sounds interesting: http://www.utexas.edu/cola/centers/lrc/eieol/norol-0-X.html .
I would love to learn icelandic and so would my mom, then I would finally have a language I could speak with my family that other people around would not understand.
Yes I want to learn Icelandic as well, in order to read the Viking sagas in their original language (or at least as close as possible to their original language), or even just to play as the Norse in Age of Mythology and understand my character's responses to my commands (which are in Icelandic, as a stand in for Old Norse).
I am waiting on an Icelandic duolingo course. Duolingo is my preferred form of language learning, I am already learning ten languages and it is super engaging! I bet it would help me with Icelandic, too :)
Ég vill laere mig isléndska. Ok, I have a long way to go but you get my drift. Let's see an Icelandic course! It would be great fun and could save a dying language!
My boyfriend and I would love to learn Icelandic on Duolingo! There aren't enough quality sources to learn it!
I can’t believe that on Duolingo you can waste your time on Klingon and learning to avoid the subtitles on Game of Thrones but you CANNOT learn one of the world’s most beautiful languages. Iceland is a sophisticated culture with a large diaspora despite its native population. They are proud of their country and it’s achievements. And it is nation with a comparatively young population, doing great things in tech and finance, not to mention the arts. There are many (and I include myself) who aspire to live and work in this amazing country. But I guess for Duolingo it’s okay to film Game of Thrones there, but NOT okay to bother with an Icelandic course. C’mon, Duolingo! You guys are brilliant! Those old Pimsleur cassette tapes just ain’t cutting it no more.
Can’t believe Duolingo has two fictional languages, but misses out on the modern version of the language that was spoken by the Vikings!!! Please reach out to your Icelandic contacts to see if anyone can help
My wife and I are moving to Iceland in two years and we really need help with the language. I love Duolingo and really want to see Icelandic!!!
I really, really, wanna learn icelandic. Like I've been using icelandic online for years, mango languages through my library, and recently started going through íslenska fyrir alla... It just sucks that there are no classes near me and the lack of TV shows and subbed/dubbed movies in my country... Ordering books from Iceland does cost me a lot of moneeeeeey just for shipping. GAHHHH.
Does anyone recommend a textbook or something? I do know my linguistics prof at my uni does teach Icelandic but really far away from campus so I can't go there... And he came from iceland! Ughhg.
I have dabbled a little in Swedish because I have a friend... But my favorite nordic language is Icelandic followed by Norwegian. I hope both would be offered soon.
You could try Colloquial Icelandic (might also be on the US Amazon for a similar price but didn't check). I've never used the Icelandic one, but I used the Danish one, which is a bit different as all the books in the series are, but I found it helpful
Edit: £27.49 w/ CDs UK amazon, US$52.20 w/ CDs US Amazon
It is my dream to live in Iceland! I truly do hope they create a course for it here. Instead I'm doing Norwegian as whilst it's not super close, it's the closest language there is.
I’ve been learning danish for this reason - I heard that in Icelandic schools they teach two foreign languages - English and Danish, so I’m hoping it will be helpful still!
I´m Icelandic. I don´t think many people here speak Danish fluently. We communicate with Scandinavians mostly in English.
I'd kill to learn Icelandic on this site. It's mutually intelligible with Old West Norse and nothing draws me more to something than association with my ancestors. I tried learning it through Icelandic Online but I found the site extremely unhelpful. It just spews Icelandic at you like you should already know it, doesn't teach worth a damn.
People always mean the written language when they talk about mutual intelligibility.
I would love to start or help contribute to an Icelandic course on Duolingo!
I mentioned this on the other thread for Icelandic but this is my number 1 request for Duolingo, and it feels even more important because I've been seeing a lot of articles lately about technology (and English prevalence) killing the Icelandic language:
Icelanders Seek to Keep Their Language Alive and Out of ‘the Latin Bin’ https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/22/world/europe/iceland-icelandic-language-linguistics.html

Please please please consider adding this language, Duolingo!
That's so sad. Such a beautiful and well preserved langauge shouldn't be allowed to die. ;(
Please someone that seriously know this such a extraordianary Language help us learn it by creating a course here in Duolingo!!
This has been made as the official Icelandic page, so come on everyone thumbs up and comment on this post so we can add Icelandic!
I think Icelandic would be so cool to learn as Iceland has so much interesting nature. I also think Icelandic would't be too hard to learn. it won't be easy though. I find it so annoying how Duolingo has put High Valyrian and other made-up languages in the incubator before real languages with lots of support.
Has anyone learned Icelandic at a fairly proficient level through English? If so, what were your resources?
I want to learn icelandic in duolingo!
My partner is Icelandic, (I'm dutch, and we live in Holland) and he is learning Dutch on duolingo. And I think the dutch course is really good! And I refreshed my Italian here also.
And the icelandic courses on other websites (like http://icelandiconline.is/ ) are not even cutting it close to the ones on duolingo.
So I vote for Icelandic on duolingo! And i'm sure my partner would be willing to volenteer contribute to it!
I'm an Icelander and I'd be willing to contribute to making this course happen, assuming of course the workload wouldn't be all on me and/or "too much". That's one reason why I have kind of shied away from suggesting it up until now on Duolingo but if enough people would be willing and able to contribute I might be able to lend a helping hand. :p Maybe the Duolingo team can assemble a list of potential contributors? At least this way I could give back to Duolingo for it's awesome language platform. P:
Have my lingot. If anything, I wouldn't mind testing it, I am in love with Iceland. I am pretty good with reporting stuff :D . When I saw there was a discussion about it, I was in awe...
Contributors to an Icelandic Duolingo course certainly seem to be lurking around here somewhere:
KianLamar: "After searching several posts about the progress of an Icelandic for English speakers course being made, it looks to me like a lot of people said that they could help." - https://www.duolingo.com/comment/12943887
Has Duo contacted any of you at all, or made any visible effort to create a course? From the outside looking in it feels like I see a number of people willing to contribute, but no movement :(
I think this is the place to sign up: https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/is/en/status
Já! Ég er að læra íslensku. Icelandic on Duolingo would significantly help keep me on top of my progress in Icelandic and I would use this site so much more.
Ég vil að læra íslensku! I've had a long fascination with Scandinavian languages and culture. Icelandic is definitely my favorite language by far though. Recently I've been using Icelandic on line and I love it to death, but I feel it's still a little lacking compared to what a Duo course would be like. Everyone we all must band together and save this beautiful language!
KianLamar also started a discussion ICELANDIC. For icelandic with 407 votes.
Hi guys, it looks like language drops (https://languagedrops.com) added icelandic to their app in November. Definitely not great for grammar, but good for some vocabulary (at least until duolingo Icelandic can happen :P). Currently I use the free version, which gives you 10 minutes of lessons a day and that isn't much, but it is a good addon thing to other language programs. Plus it does the pictures+icelandic word without showing the english every time, which happens to work better for me.
Another vote for Icelandic, please! The similarities with Old Norse would really help us English speakers with reading / researching the sagas. ;-) Thank you!
They have two fictional languages on their app now, it wouldn't hurt them to add Icelandic! Please add Icelandic. A beautiful language for a beautiful country
I loved Iceland and the Icelandic language. It would be great to learn it on Duolingo.
I'd love to learn Icelandic through duolingo, I'm a medieval studies student and will probably have to learn Icelandic at some point in the future due to most of the texts for northern Europe being written in it.
i'm faroese :) and i'm bilingual with icelandic , i could help to create a course ^^
I´m from Iceland. I asked DL to let me contribute to an Icelandic course for English speakers. They never answered me. It´s cool to see so many people interested in our language.
Did you apply through this website? https://incubator.duolingo.com/courses/is/en/status
Yes, I really wanted to learn Old Norse or its close cousin Icelandic to read the sagas but went for Swedish because these languages weren't offered here. But I would still love to study both Old Norse and Icelandic. I don't know why I like to focus on the northern European languages. Maybe because Swedish feels very close to English to me and a lot of English words have Old Norse roots. I have no known ancestors from these countries. Other things I like are their progressive social policies. Some of the other language learning websites do not seem to offer such a good learning experience so I will stick with Duolingo for now.
Those are exactly some of the reasons I chose Norwegian (and started with Danish and Swedish, though I've focused on Norwegian). I'd love Icelandic to be on duolingo too.
It's a good site for amateurs at the language however it's a bit confusing for beginners.
I checked this out. It looks pretty good. Duo Lingo can be more convenient though, at least a good way to practice a language.
how many interested would-be icelandic speakers does duolingo want before they begin development on an icelandic module?
what if a school in iceland volunteered to supply material as a school project? would that help?
I went through the free course taught by Alaric Hall and found it very helpful: https://alarichall.org.uk/teaching/modern_icelandic.php
In combination with listening to icelandic talk radio (http://radio.is:443/saga.m3u), I learned a lot and it took me about 3-4 months to get through all of the podcasts (repeating lessons until I had somewhat mastered the material). I also did the icelandiconline courses, which helped with mastering the alphabet, but it wasn't the best format and it was hard to practice older lessons. I recommend the Bjargir course at least from that website.
(but also a duolingo course would be great of course please :)
You definitely have my vote! I also want to learn icelandic! I hope Duolingo hear our call! :)
Yes please! My area of interest is North Germanic languages and Icelandic along with Faroese is the one that ties modern language to Old Norse - another language I'd be interested in.
This is the Duolingo course I am most looking forward to. I hope it gets made someday!
Yes please, Icelandic for English speakers please! Or even for German speakers, I could live with that :D
I want to learn Icelandic. I want to travel their abroad for a semester in college to train the horses their. I went a few months ago and even though most spoke decent english, it was still hard to communicate sometimes. I think it would be great if I could learn icelandic on duolingo!
Going to work in Iceland would likely provide more training in Icelandic than any online course, Memrise has a few Icelandic courses to take and can get you started with basic vocabulary.
It's been 4 years and still no Icelandic. I really wish to learn Icelandic
YES YES A MILLION TIMES YES!!!
Yes please, Icelandic would be great. There must be many Icelanders who would welcome all this interest in their language!
I second, third, and fourth this motion! Please please please bring Icelandic to Duolingo, its my only target language not on here!
Please consider adding the Icelandic language I am trying to teach myself the language and very little learning material appears to be available
Why is Icelandic not on! If the natives are worried their language is dying, surely they would want to help by making courses here on Duolingo!? You have such a beautiful language and country Iceland. Please allow us the opportunity to preserve your language :c
I'm yet another person who would love to learn Icelandic on Duolingo. Here's to hoping they get an Icelandic course soon.
Please add Icelandic! I’ve found other apps offering wording, but nothing that helps with phrasing, grammar & pronociation the way Duolingo does - and there’s not really options around for IRL lessons the way there may be for French or German (in the UK) so it would be incredibly useful if you offered Icelandic lessons and I’d definitely get a premium account we’re that the case. Thanks!
Icelandic is another language I really want to learn! I'd love it if it came to Duolingo!
For the love of god Duolingo. Add the language already it cant be that hard. As far as i can tell, plenty of people want to help. You have a couple of fictional languages, but you struggle to add the most beautiful one? I love you guys but c'mon! :)
I really like Duo's teaching methods. Learning Icelandic that way would be wonderful, given that there are so few resources for it as well. I'm really vouching for this.
I confirm I would love Icelandic to be in the incubator. Please consider including Icelandic on Duolingo
Icelandic actually sounds really interesting! Let's get this into the incubator!
I am bilingual in English and Icelandic and could contribute to this course! Also know other people who could help! Please make this happen, I would love to help out. There are thousands of expats living in Iceland who need a good tool to learn Icelandic with!
That’s amazing! You need to apply to contribute on the incubator:
The more applications the better - hopefully we will get this course one day! :) good luck!
It has been so long that people have expressed interest in this course, when will it come? Hopefully it will arrive eventually.
Icelandic is such a beautiful language; I implore willing speakers to apply to the incubator. If you scroll to the bottom of the list of languages, you will see the option "enter another." https://incubator.duolingo.com/apply
I would love to learn Icelandic! Right now I'm using an app called "Drops" but it gives you limited time and only vocab, not how to construct sentences. Icelandic is such an amazing and fun language!
I would love this.
It is a wonderful Germanic language! If I could give 100 votes I would...
I want to learn Icelandic on Duolingo, too! I am taking it on Memrise, but I am studying most of my languages on Duolingo, so it would make it easier to switch back and forth.
As someone who wants to move to Iceland in the far future, I'd kill to have this on here.
5 years ago.. Is it even in the incubator? I would like an Icelandic course too, i guess Norwegian will have to do for now.
Yes please please do have an Icelandic course! After all you even have High Valyrian and Klingon. Duolingo, are you even reading this? It’s been 5 years of petition here....
I would also love an Icelandic course! Some years ago I gave it a try with the Langenscheidt Book, but Duolingo would be much more fun! This discussion started long ago but there are also so many users asking for Icelandic again and again! Can we do anything? How can we vote for courses?
Me too! For me German-Icelandic would be ideal, but English-Icelandic would also be great!
