French has 9.75 million people practicing!
Hello everyone! Today, I saw that French has reached 9.75M people!I want to congratulate everyone who is practicing French right now, and not just going through the first lesson and stopping. By September, French should reach 10M people! All I wanted to say!
wow that is some very good news. I love French and I am never going to give up learning it and becoming fluent!
thats great news!! However, like what you mentioned, most of them quit after the first lesson. I don't know the real statistics but usually, less than 0.5% actually go much further or even end up finishing the course. whether you think this is nonsense or not, I noticed this when i finished my russian course on memrise and i was the 250th or so, OUT OF 50K. meaning about 250 out of 50,000 people actually finished the course.
This was on memrise.com, but it should be relatively the same for all language courses out there. If you use memrise, you can see the leaderboards for the most points on the each course. Once you finished any course, you could see your rank and check how many people started the course, thats what i did. It should be a rough measure how many people finished the course.
Honestly, I don’t really think you can compare Duolingo and Memrise... They are really two very different animals... Memrise is a very good vocabulary practicing tool (I even have a course I’m building as I’m studying and currently over 100 people are using it), but because it gives you tremendous pressure with the need for “watering” and a LOT at any given time, I would really believe that the “drop-out rate” is way higher than on Duolingo, which is a language learning tool, with much less pressure and more fun... I’m not saying there are no drop-outs, there are a lot, but I really don’t think the rates are comparable, that’s all.
I've made a few attempts in the past to learn french but didn't make it far, I always regret not finishing though so this time I decided to grow up, man up, and finish what I start haha!
I just started duo lingo and I am doing french and spanish. Before I get to far I wanted to ask everyone if this website really does work? If you do finish a whole course can you actually hold a conversation or even really read an article written in the course you finished?
I don’t know about the Spanish part, but I can tell you a very definitive YES to that. I was able to hold hours of conversations in French after just 2 month or so...
I've been learning french for about 5 years from different teachers and different programs. When I was told about Duolingo I was like ??!???!?!?! Why didn't anyone tell me this before?!!?!?! So now I'm slowly progressing, my streak always dying on the weekends >-< Ah well! and I encourage you all to continue! I've suffered through five years of learning nothing and now I will continue for another 5 years with Duolingo. . . . learning something. Hope you liked my story =]
That would be okay if we believed that they had learned the language they came here for. :-)
I hated it before to be honest... well... before I got to know it... now I love it! C’est vraiment une extrêmement belle langue!
I'm a new guy studying French on the Website. Hope to meet guys to practice with me !!!!!
I'm sure you will find plenty of people to interact with here at Duolingo! Keep learning and involving yourself with the community. I'm a French-starter-learner too. ^^ Good luck with completing your tree! :D
This is wonderful news to read. I do not dare attempt to write this in French. I do not have the vocabulary yet. The thought and desire is there nevertheless.
Awesome sauce. Would hate to lose my streak. At my rate, I could finish this course December or early January next year.
Great, I started recently but will finish this course and never will give up. I like french so much.
Yeah :) I started learning French from this site 6 days ago and have been enjoying it a lot
