I miss the conversations on the app.
I miss being able to practice using what I learned on the app. The new leader board is motivating but ultimately useless. The old format with conversations and interactive questions was better for me, the learner, to gain confidence in using the material I was learning in a more free form platform. The leader board doesn't allow for any interaction with other users. Drop the new leader board and incorporate some of the old features in the next update. Please.
Right?! It was just a better feature. I don't care if I'm in Ruby or bronze league. I want to learn a language. The club's helped, the leader board does not.
I remember how I used to use it all the time! It was definetly better than the leaderboard
I miss the clubs too. The leagues encourage competition through repeating the stories over and over again mindlessly to gain the maximum points, while the clubs encouraged the members to use the language they were studying. The clubs were fun. Our club had members of many ages and from many different countries. We enjoyed writing and asking questions about geography, hobbies, customs, culture, travel, hobbies and more. All this helped us increase our vocabularies and become more confident in our writing skills. Please bring back the clubs duo--they were an amazing feature.
Exactly! I feel like I've been much more focused on gaining XP's than learning these days. I'd rather have those listening exercises and questions back, not to mention the ability to chat and get more "real" practice..
Or keep the leagues for the ones who like them and bring back the clubs for the rest of us!
I feel like the leagues and the clubs would go nicely hand-in-hand. Clubs and leaderboards are different fundamentally in that in leaderboards people are competing against each other, but in clubs people are conversing and helping each other. Both of them should be there I think.
It would be cool if they had a leaderboard for a club. The club could gain exp based on certain things (Idk what they would do)
Which would end up with zero persons using the leagues - exactly the way it should be. But Duo doesn't want to be proven wrong.
I think some kids LOVE the leagues. I see them on FB talking about them all the time.
I am sure some people love the competition but I don't see how a league helps us learn the language or use the language we are learning. For competition I play sports, for learning a language I need dialogue.
I also need to understand what to do. Being in a club, they were able to help me better understand the language I was learning. Now it's just harder! We all need the clubs back!
I never saw the old format. Wisht I had. That's the VITAL stuff-for me- to LEARN a THING as opposed to just.... scratches and photographs of letters on the outside of my skinny distressed-leather brain.
I agree in the fullest. I’m back on for a recap and it’s honestly not the same. It’s harder to understand.
I agree with you interactions with other users are more fun. The leader board is boring either not motivating.
The clubs were a good idea, but the problem was that they were inactive. I was constantly changing clubs to find one that have active members. Because being the only one to answer the questions and reaching the first place only because no one else was practicing wasn't that much fun...
(I don't like the league btw but it's true that it encourages me to practice)
I agree that in my club of about 40, there were only about 5-6 of us who were active - but I really enjoyed conversing and asking/answering questions with those 5-6 people.
I had a wonderful club. Everyone was keen to learn I felt like I am not learning alone. I was motivated to race for the top. I was improving. The best club I had found. There were people more fluent than me who helped me learn a concept easily and more practically. But then they removed it all. I would love to download the app again if they bring back the club.
I agree. The new system does nothing except promote competition. However that competition does not primate in any remote way learning. I much preferred the old system of clubs where you could talk to one another and ask questions.
I was just thinking the same thing. I think the leagues are a good idea to promote competition but they should have kept the clubs. In my opinion, the clubs gave me the opportunity to actually use a language by interacting with other like-minded people. And it just made learning a language fun.
I don't understand Duolingo. There are so many good suggestions to really make this app amazing, yet they don't focus on any of these easy fixes/additions. Disappointing.
Duolingo have stated in several places (don’t have the links but other people on the forum have posted the links and I did read them) that they are not interested in their users’ opinions. They say people say one thing but do another. So what Duolingo pays attention to is metrics - measurements of what people do. If more people use Duolingo more often after the introduction of leaderboards then I guess they take that metric as proof of success.... So hopefully now you understand them better now. Sorry. I can’t help with the disappointment tho. :-(
Not sure it has to be one or the other (meaning, I don't know if we would have to drop leaderboards in order to get a way to practice what we learned with each other). Clubs could definitely be improved and I think we'll keep trying new ways to connect learners.
It's not a matter of using them - after all, you can't opt out. I just try not to focus on it. I'm in Ruby which is where I've basically remained because I don't want to do more work in a day than what I will retain. For a while I was doing that. But you can only retain so much. Doing a few lessons each day - and if possible conversing or responding to questions it so much better than just trying get the numbers is the way to learn.
LOTS of people enjoy them. Mostly I ignore them, but once in awhile I play them. But on FB groups I see a LOT of (mostly younger) people just loving them.!
I’ve had to go into settings and turn off leagues because I just wasn’t learning anything and was too busy getting through the league. I turn it back on on sundays now, but that’s it.
OMG. I miss them too. I stopped doing duolingo, but I have started back up again this year, and I noticed they got rid of them. I was like, WHAT?
