What may cause comments to lose all of their upvotes?

I frequently come across older posts because I get email notifications for - I'm guessing - a few thousand threads, and because I often search for older info to cross-reference when helping people.

Hence, I've noticed on a number of occasions that comments left either by myself or by others suddenly lose all of their upvotes. This is obviously most noticable when they had lots of them.

For instance, in https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/7095727, my reply to the top-level comment lost all of its upvotes a while ago. And yesterday, Lundgren8's Venn diagram reply - which had several hundred upvotes - lost all upvotes except, apparently, mine.

Another example can be found in https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/8618096 where my comment used to have lots more upvotes.

I don't really care about the upvotes on my comments (or I would have reported this much earlier), but I've recently started noticing this happen to posts by other people as well, and it does annoy me that it kills the established comment hierarchy.

This happened to some high profile language request posts a while back, including the main ones for Finnish and Latin, and to the announcement post when Activity was removed (though that had negative votes instead of upvotes). As far as I know no cause was ever identified, though some users jumped to the conclusion that it was mega vote spamming or Duo intentionally resetting the votes with malicious intent.

Thanks! Not too surprised to hear about that, though I haven't seen complaints about it myself before.

I haven't found a discussion specifically about it, I think it was mostly comments in other discussions, so it would be easy to miss if you weren't haunting the right forum at the right time.

Worth saying here then that Duolingo has not and does not intentionally reset votes.

As anyone who thinks about it should hopefully know, since if Duolingo wanted to do that for any malicious purpose they're going about it in the worst, most illogical possible way. :) (Resetting them randomly on a few and leaving the rest, and randomly resetting occasional perfectly good posts with no plausible reason for doing so? That's the best tactic for censorship, especially when you want to hide it!)

Maybe that's just what Vivi wants you to think. :D

Seriously, though - just to be clear - I've obviously always assumed it's a bug, certainly nothing intentional.

I reached that conclusion before Vivi said a word on the subject. :p

I think she was just responding to the last part of my comment, the "some users jumped to the conclusion..." part, in case anyone who thought that or might be led to think that are on this discussion.

An ASL request post from a few years back also dropped from over 800 upvotes to fewer than 100.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Trofaste

Did it drop to zero and then upvotes took it back up some? Or did it drop to a number between 0 and 100?

It being old. I don't check it often. So, I don't know.

Downvote spammers just downvote everything. I had a post that went from +49 to just 3.

I think that's extremely unlikely to be what happened to some discussions that had thousands of upvotes.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/devalanteriel

That's possible, of course, but I still find it unlikely - especially given that it appears to count my upvotes on affected comments. It seems odd that the spammers would go down to 1 every time I have upvoted something, but to 0 otherwise.

@devalanteriel So sorry, i was in a hurry and presumed that this person only had a few up votes, not hundreds! I'm assuming this is some sort of glitch in Duolingo!
