I LOATHE and DESPISE THE NEW GEMS AND HEARTS SYSTEM

@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$@#$

I HATE THIS SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THIS IS A BETRAYAL AND DISCOURAGES LEARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HORRIBLE!!!!!!

DUOLINGO TAKES 10 STEPS BACK AND SCREWS ITS USERS!!!!!!!!!!

Clearly, this is a ploy to pressure people to upgrade to PLUS (which I've already paid for for at least the past 2 years). I paid for this despite the fact that DL is free because I believe(d) in DuoLingo's STATED MISSION, in pertinent part:

"We created Duolingo so that everyone could have a chance. Free language education – no hidden fees, no premium content, just free."

I feel this places a sharp disincentive on learning and conflicts with other aspects of the system design because Duolingo teaches via a trial and error pedagogical style. You've also implemented competition. This would have the effect of giving paying members an overwhelming advantage not only in the competition, but worse, in the learning itself, especially if you haven't been racking up thousands of lingots to start with like myself. But they weren't easily earned to be spending them just for missing a few questions in a language I'm a neophyte in. You learn from context and you are asked to type sentences you've never seen before. Oh, that sentence has a special quirk? There's no way to get it right the first time. And when you're studying a language that's very new to you doing sets of 20 questions, it's easy to make 5 errors. Oh but if you're out of hearts you CAN'T finish the last question of a set or start another lesson without paying for it???

Anyway, if Duolingo is going to start completely screwing its free members, I'm going to cancel my PLUS membership, because that's not the Duolingo I know and believe in.

Does anyone now not have hearts on iOS? It appeared to me today, and I always seem to get these sorts of things last.

Nice Streak and are you learning all of the languages? How hard is it?

Or you can simply replenish your hearts with practices.

Hi Coby,

have you got it on Android?
It was announced here "April 2019 updates": https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/31849174

Have you tried to rollback to older app versions which might not have the health implementation already?

Sorry to ask, but how is this related to the "French" language sub forum?

Currently you have placed your complaining thread here.
Don't you think it will just clutter that forum?

Suggestion

At least pick the Troubleshooting or general Duolingo forums; not even a forum moderator can move your post.

You would have to do that for yourself by editing your main comment and picking one of the other forums from the list where you have to be subscribed (EDIT subscriptions button on the forum entry page).

I do not think that staff even reads any of the language sub forums.

Best regards / Viele Grüße

    Another (more interesting) question:

Can you already apply the "health shield" on the Android app?

    https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016054151-How-do-I-enable-the-Health-Hearts-Shield-

No idea since what version staff might have added the shield to.

I am on a quite old Duolingo app version like V3.72.2 (still supports landscape mode) or V3.80.2 (only portrait mode, had added club member detail page, no tips) on KOPlayer.

    ..(...)..

I lost track a bit - with their bad changelogs - when the new "mobile grammar notes" (=new tips) for new CEFR courses (+German and Italian) got finally added.

Another interesting feature for an app version consideration might be the timed "double XP" store feature for Leagues (but I do almost exclusively use the web portal and not the mobile apps with tapping that much).

Update: more new features also appeared today, so overall DL is improving (content, form, etc).

To put a finer point on my frustration, it is that I feel the hearts refill is "too expensive" in terms of the gems.

Gonna keep using the online (web) version for this reason exactly
