French TV series similar to the Spanish series Cuéntame?

I am reposting this on the French board, as it received no replies (but instead, for some reason, some downvotes among a few upvotes) on the English board...

I have really enjoyed watching the Spanish series Cuéntame como pasó over the years. I am watching it with subtitles, so I can follow the story line without effort and still pick up a few words and expressions here and there, although they do talk fast (and a lot!).

Is there something similar out there for French? It doesn't have to be historical, but I am looking for something a bit more authentic and serious than a lot of the children's TV being discussed on here. Then again, I tried watching Un village français, and that was just too depressing. Any ideas? Any murder mysteries in French would also be much appreciated! Something along the lines of Poirot, Der Alte, etc. Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

What the heck is with those down votes? This is a great question, and I am eager to see the replies :)

I'll probably get down voted for this comment because it's off topic and because I dared mention down votes :-/ Anyway, I up voted you, so you're back at zero :)

Thanks! I tend to do a bit of "protective upvoting" as well, just for anything that seems vaguely good. I'm glad we good a few good ideas in this discussion!

Someone came and downvoted another thread as well. I'm going to have to start giving out "protective" upvotes. :D

Engrenages/Spiral on Netflix is good. It's similar to Law and Order, but more graphic since it's French TV. I watched the whole series and it's very hard to pick up what they are saying. You will learn your swear words pretty quickly from this show. You really have to watch adult shows at full volume to pick up things better. Unfortunately it didn't work for me because my wife hates when I watch french shows before bed and/or I don't want to wake my daughter up with loud french people swearing every two seconds. I ended up reading subtitles most of the time.

The problem with this bulletin board style is that all the same questions get repeated because posts fall into the bottomless pit, maybe that's why you're not getting many responses. Bonne chance!

Thanks! "Similar to Law and Order" sounds good!

I'd certainly have to use subtitles (be they in French or in English), as I can take part in a bilingual meeting in a professional setting with French speaking people, but my understanding of colloquial spoken French is about at the level of the Extr@-series... But the combination of headphones and subtitles is good for learning (and for sleeping children...).

Very true. Headphones make understanding a lot easier. I've watched a few shows with headphones and things were much easier to comprehend.

I have no idea what motivated those downvotes either, but trying to understand such behaviour is probably a waste of effort.

Unfortunately I don't have anything I can recommend from personal experience, but I remember reading that Les Revenants has been getting excellent reviews, though perhaps it's a little more fantastical than what you were after. I also came across this article , which recommended Maison Close (and some other series already mentioned on this thread).

I've seen Les Revenants and I must say it's excellent and I really do recommend it. From the very first scene in the first episode I was completely hooked. It is a bit fantastical yes - it's quite mysterious (think something like Lost) so perhaps not exactly what OP was looking for but nonetheless it is great. I can't wait for Season 2!

I don't think they've set a date yet unfortunately :( Late 2014/sometime 2015 is all I've heard.

I might not normally watch something like what you are describing, but I am certainly willing to give it a try! When you focus on the language and the cultural aspects, you don't have so much time to think of the story line anyway.

Thanks for the suggestions!
