How about أسرة ? What is the difference?

I think أسرة is the close family and عائله is the extended family.

أسرة = parents + children (also known nowadays as household)
عائلة = the whole family

I am a native speaker and you made me hit the dictionary, I really have no idea what the difference between the two. The only obvious difference is in عائلة the root is "to provide" thus it is a group of people of with a provider (the father). اسرة is from the root "to put together" in on of its meanings, so there you go. Both work really :)
