Esperanto skills reset?
So today Duolingo greeted me with a short notification saying there has been a course update and, behold, 39 skills from my skill tree have been reset to level 0, down from level 3.
What the hell? Is this normal, or am I the only one? I'm pretty upset about it.
It's normal, it happens for every course, and there's currently no way around it.
Manĝu terpomojn kaj feliĉiĝu!
My daughter is heartbroken. She's been working on the course for more than a year now. Very demotivating.
But if the course has been updated, what are the updates?
What are the blue dots in front of some of the skill names? (Some reset, some still golden) I don't have them in any of my other courses.
I feel like there's just NOTHING new, this is total nonsense... How could they possibly believe this is something good to do? And why didn't they tell us about it? I wrote to them and I'm pretty sure I'm never getting a response, I'm very disappointed
The participle lessons, especially Participle 1, were quite bad, and often incorrect. However, these were not reset. So, evidently they did not update some of the lessons that needed it the most.
The problematic lesson in Participle 1 has been removed entirely (the one with things like 'devintus' and 'povintus' in it. I'd guess that removing stuff doesn't cause a skill to be reset, only adding stuff.
I had 50% to level 5, an additional 25% to level 3, and was a few lessons from my level 2 golden owl. It's all gone to hell now. I'm really mad.
Yes, mine was resent in late August. I was halfway done the tree (all golden).
90% went down to purple (lowest level). It has taken me the 3 months since then to get back to where I was...and it will still take me another month. So I lost 4 months. Yes, I could have tested out of each level and that probably would have reduced that to 1 month.
I hope I don't get reset again before I finish the tree (late next spring, at current rate). If so I will probably give up on Duolingo.
If you are actually learning the material you probably could have reduced it to a few days by testing, not a month... If it takes you a month to test out of all of your skills again you probably didn't learn anything...
Doing 20-question quizzes is time-consuming. And it's easy to make clerical errors, because you're bored with the old material and want to move on.
Yeah the errors are getting me. I usually use the computer, but I'm using my phone for autofill to dk this since by the last lesson it memories the sentence for me lol. I just spam click middle of screen after two words. This is super annoying. The inly new thing I've seen is I think they added some additional written material for the lessons but I'm not sure.
Its a bummer (I lost my golden owl and a lot of skills too), but on one hand, it is nice to see that the course is always improving.
It doesn't make any sense that they do this, a big part of Duolingo's appeal is the gamification, all the silly medals, crowns etc. to make it addictive.
I just tested out of the entire last level to get my level 1 golden owl back. It was a long test, as there are many lessons. Two of the "mistakes" I made were not actually errors. For example I used "limo" for border instead of "landlimo", which was acceptable for many phrases but not the one in the test. Afterwards, I raised the first checkpoint lessons (that were not still gold) up to level 4, and the second checkpoint lessons all up to level 2 by testing up on every lesson. Geez, who wants to do "la malbela bebo dancas rapide" all over again? Stupid.
I reported it as a bug. This is insane. 75% or more of my lessons back to (far) under level 1, some where on level 3 on 4.
Please all, report it as a bug. https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
This has also happened to me. Not impressed. Most of my tree has been completely reset. It's a good way to discourage people.
Same here, what's going on??? I worked hard on making my skill tree entirely gold and now it's all gone :/
Same here. I was so close to reaching my first checkpoint too. But as I started going through the lessons again, it reminded me that I wasn't reviewing as much as I should, so I guess some good came out of it.
You know, it's not so bad, you can easily re-level the skills by immediately doing tests, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this was unnecessary.
wait how do you access the test? luckily only two of mine are gone, i pity you
Maybe not everyone has access to that feature, due to Duolingo's A-B testing, but you can usually click on a Skill and then click on the key icon to do a test. Succeeding in a test allows you to instantly go up 1 level in that Skill.
thanks, I do have the key I just forgot it was a thing... off to catch up on a month gr8
You click the key icon on the lesson. You can test out 1 level at a time. It costs lingots on the app, on the computer it is free. On the computer there is also written lessons for each one.
Yeah, happened with me to. Will take a couple of weeks of hard work to get to where I was
