Thank you for 'Make Harder' option!
Just a quick thank you to the devs - and a pointer in case anyone like me has only just noticed it - of the 'Make Harder' option at the bottom of 'fill the blank' questions, which changes it to a regular 'translate this sentence' question!
Personally much better for my grammar practice, thank you for adding the option!
(P.S. still hoping for a harder/custom practice mode :P)
I just found this too. Great post! I use the website on my laptop. I found it on level 3 of a skill. It has an "Increase the Difficulty" option at the bottom in the middle. I have only found it on the "fill in the blank" questions so far. This is such a great addition. Thank you for bringing this to our attention!
I see it! Yay! It was on lesson 3/5 on the fill in the missing word question. Cool! Thanks for sharing! I use my computer at home so Idk if it's on the app too.
I remember seeing someone post a request for such a feature not that long ago---
They do hear us! :0
I am very surprised. I hope they continue to add such options!!! I might return as a regular here.
Yes, on desktop! Just noticed it for the first time today - maybe it's being slowly rolled out/tested? My partner and I both use Duolingo so we often notice a lot of differences between our accounts, recently with them getting broken gold tasks which I haven't seen yet.
Anyway it's at the bottom in the same place as the 'use keyboard'/'use wordbank' button!
Yes! I'm learning Russian and the "make harder" button is fantastic for practicing my spelling ... which is still somewhat shaky, heh. In any case, I make sure to use it wherever I see it, because I want it to stay! :D
I also recently noticed in the app (I don't have it, Mom does) that one can disable motivational message thingies now. Please bring that to PC!!!!

Another great update was stories on the app. My "thank you" post was dv within 5 minutes.
But if you already have chosen to use keyboard input instead of the far-too-easy word picking thing, this "make harder" option doesn't really add much – it generally only causes unnecessary repetition, i.e. having to type the same sentence twice in the same lesson.
It means you have to type that little bit extra - a full sentence or phrase instead of a single word. Which is great for spelling practice. :)

But not at all an efficient use of your practicing time, if you've already typed that exact same sentence a minute ago.
thanks for sharing this and your L3 tip.
This is cool, I also got it yesterday on the www.duolingo.com webportal, even in my reverse tree (I picked a L3 crown level skill).
But I am still missing this option for new L0->L1 crown sessions (=lessons).
@staff / developers
Please make sure that you offer this option for EACH L0->L1 and L1-L2 learning/practice session, especially reverse- and laddering trees.
As long as you offer a user to switch back at the bottom panel, I do not see any harm for your metrics.
For reverse trees the translation direction is quite often the wrong one (into German = I am a native German speaker; or into English = I have been practicing this language for 24+ years + early primary and secondary school years).
Getting 100% typing exercises (vs "fill the word into the blank" challenges) on the web - with the right translation direction (custom user settings) - is IMHO the much better thing.
I want to have the same (toggle harder/typing) option for "multiple-choice" questions on the web portal!
The (too) many M-C challenges do not help me that much for my two Portuguese reverse trees;
I am already hiding all the L1 source (Portuguese) sentences and three L2 target (German or English) answer options, with the help of Camilo's Tampermonkey userscript, because of this dilemma.
Instead of I want (need) to be FORCED into 100% (or at least 70:30/80:20) typing of sentences in the L1 source (Portuguese) languages for my two PT->EN and PT->DE trees!!!
Just like Memrise supports that inofficially for planted words/phrases/sentences with classic reviews (I can turn OFF multiple-choice on the web with the help of Tampermonkey userscripts).
Thanks so much for listening to your community users!
With best regards / Viele Grüße aus Deutschland
At last. I feel like my cries have been heard and Duolingo has come through. My days of translating one word in a sentence and learning nothing...e.g. menu to menú...are finally over.
Thank you, I had missed that, it is a great addition, félicitations duo.
I also enjoy this feature, as I think it helps me go at my own pace for certain words, phrases, etc. I do find that sometimes Duolingo is repetitive with certain questions and phrases that I have already perfected, and this feature helps me a lot with cases like these. Great post, and thank you Duolingo for this feature!
The 'make harder' option is very helpful to practice grammar. (German grammar is difficult)
Hi is the 'Make harder' option only for Plus members/ iOS users? I can't find it. I use the DL app for Android.

I also got it recently on the web portal in one of my Portuguese reverse trees for a level 3 skill when I did a normal "crown session" (=lesson).
For the moment it ONLY seems to be a replacement for the "fill the word into the blank" type exercises.
Multiple-choice questions are still shown to me, which I hide all source/base text and three answer-options with a userscript.
I can't "upgrade" multiple-choice to typing yet.
On normal L0->L1 lessons the "Make harder" option was not given to me; this would be fun for my two reverse trees.
you mean the third tower or the third round or each lesson? I got almost all the lessons i did turned into gold, so 5th round but did not see it. I am only using the labtop. - Or is the make harder button just the one where you do find the options to click and have to write it yourself? Thats what i use since i started here 4 weeks ago. Doesn't say 'harder'though
where is this make harder option? did three lessons still cant find it :(
Can anyone explain to me when and where can I find that button? Is it specific for certain languages?
Thanks for sharing! Didn't know about this feature until I came across your post.
This option just got rolled out to me, and I am SO HAPPY. Thank you, Duolingo! This is what I've been waiting for for ages. Not having it meant that I quit the site for a long time, but now I'm back.
