Armenian Language

From browsing around the forums, I've noticed that we have quite a few Armenians. And so, I'd like to make this discussion page to raise support for the Armenian course that I'm sure will eventually be offered here. If you know the language or would like to learn it...discuss. And if you support the cause don't be ashamed to show it!

June 30, 2014

I probably wouldn't learn it myself, but I am all for new languages in the Incubator! COME ON ARMENIAN!

June 30, 2014

Let's learn some Armenian...

November 25, 2016

I recommend its a language exchange-based social network website.

May 13, 2019

armenian is the best

September 1, 2019

Hey! As an Armenian, I would love to help if this amazing idea becomes reality. I speak Eastern Armenian, I know some Western Armenian, but I assume the course will be for Eastern Armenian. I think this course needs to be added because of all the Armenians living outside who don't speak Armenian. With Duolingo, we can encourage those Armenians to study it! It would be amazing if I could contribute to this course.

March 11, 2017

The more applicants there are, the more likely it is to become reality.

March 12, 2017

It would also be helpful to have Western Armenian as well.

April 17, 2019

I am a Belgian and I am very interested in Armenian culture, history and language. It's difficult to find good learning platforms for Armenian online, and I really hope it will be added to Duolingo soon!

May 14, 2016

My sentiments exactly! Thanks for support.

May 14, 2016

I signed your petition btw, hope you reach your goal! If you get Armenian into Duolingo, I'll be among te first people to use it! ;) Nice profile pic btw. I'm sorry for what's happening to Artsakh and its people. I support Armenia, and I hope the world will open its eyes and see what dictatorial, racist and repressive regime Azerbaijan really is.

May 14, 2016

On behalf of all Armenians, thank you for your understanding and support. The people of Artsakh have been through a lot worse than money-hungry dictators.

May 14, 2016

I had made a request about a year ago asking Duolingo to add Western Armenian specifically (as I'm an սփիւռքահայ living in California. I went to Armenian school growing up, so I can speak, read, and write, but I know so many Armenians who don't know their own language.

So I'd love to contribute and see this course developed.

I'm also very happy to see another Armenian with the same intention.

(I just also made a post in the poll page

July 5, 2015

I was really hoping that Armenian would be one of the languages when I downloaded Duolingo. I have Armenian friends and co-workers and it would be awesome if I could communicate with them in their native language. It's been 2 years since this discussion and it's a pity that it hasn't been added to Incubator yet. I hope this changes soon.

October 31, 2016

I'm from Norway and have been trying to learn (eastern) Armenian for quite a while. It has been difficult to find good courses on the internet so I heartly welcome an Armenian course :-)

February 28, 2016

Awesome! I know it's really hard to find one. That's the main reason I want to start one on duolingo.

March 1, 2016

I plan to do every few lessons (the first five or so) of every language to see which one catches my eye after I learn German and Spanish. So more languages the merrier :).

June 30, 2014

GMail just added Armenian! Time for Duolingo to add it too!

July 7, 2014

The other guitarist of my band is armenian and i'd love to be able to speak with him in his native language, i hope they add armenian soon

January 31, 2015

I'm half Armenian and I'd love to learn Armenian on such an app.

January 12, 2016

I would really really like to learn Armenian!!!!! It is 25% of my heritage, I would love to visit Armenia one day knowing the language and to be able to speak with some of my older relatives. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make it available!!!!

February 10, 2016

You can petition with the link on my profile. Thanks for the support!

February 12, 2016

I would love to learn this language. I can speak and understand the language a little, but I cannot read and write well which is the main challenge for me. I am hoping Duolingo will be my superhero in teaching Armenian. However, there are some questions and issues that needs to be addressed. I checked the change petition link and it is already closed. Will there be another petition? One main issue is, which language is it going to be followed after, Eastern or Western? This should be addressed because when it comes to reading and writing, they both have their literary form of writing. Personally, I speak Eastern Armenian and I will not mind which side will be contributed. It should be noted that in Armenia and minority of the diaspora (Russia, Iran, etc.) speak Eastern Armenian while the majority of the diaspora (USA, Turkey, Lebanon, Brazil) speak Western Armenian. When Armenian is released into the incubator, I believe it would beneficial to everyone for Armenian to be emphasized on whether it is (Eastern) or (Western). For example when it get released in the Incubator and Duolingo, we should see it as Armenian (Eastern) or Armenian (Western). Who knows? Maybe one day, contributors can make two separate courses of the Armenian language for both Eastern and Western. Armenians have a huge diaspora where 70-80% of the world's Armenians live outside of Armenia and struggle to maintain the Armenian language. Duolingo can become a great tool to tackle this cultural, linguistic issue of the diaspora. Anyway, with that mentioned, I can't wait for Armenian as I would be the first to genuinely learn to speak, read, and write the language. Come on, Duolingo. Fulfill our dream.

October 19, 2016

The majority of people that have offered to contribute to a course speak Eastern Armenian. If I remember correctly, I've only encountered two Western Armenian speakers on Duolingo. I disagree that it needs to be emphasized. The precedent is that the flag under the language implies where it is spoken. For example, Portuguese uses the Brazilian flag and Korean uses the South Korean flag. And your last point is the reason we want to make a course so passionately. Thanks for the consideration.

October 20, 2016

All I want in life is Armenian on duolingo! We need a good platform for learning the language!

May 4, 2016

I really, really want to learn Armenian! My grandfather's family was Armenian, but he died before I was born and I don't think any of the relatives who spoke it are still alive. I've been trying to find a place to learn it for ages, with little success. It would be amazing to be able to learn it here! If I can make a suggestion, though, it would be to include a section early on about the alphabet and how to read it, like in the Hebrew course. That's been one of my main obstacles to learning, at least. I hope this ends up working out!!

July 24, 2016

I would love to learn armenian. such a beautiful and unique language.

August 19, 2016

Love the duolingo language learning system, please add Armenian to your list of choices.

December 4, 2014

I want to learn armenian

May 16, 2015

Thanks for the support! Please vote here for Armenian!

May 26, 2015

Commenting for a friend who will join as soon as this language is an option!

September 14, 2016

Western Armenian is listed as an endangered language by the UN. It is also the language spoken by the descendants of the Genocide survivors. Its survival is therefore a priority issue. I would like to contribute AND vote for developing a Western Armenian course before engaging in Eastern Armenian.

November 1, 2016

I'm a descendant of genocide survivors, but speak Eastern Armenian. The fact is that from what I've seen, there aren't many people that can contribute to a WA course on Duolingo, or if there are, I haven't spoken with them. In terms of helping the community of Armenians who speak the Istanbul dialect, a Western Armenian course is obviously the most beneficial. But for second language learners, Eastern Armenian is without a doubt the most strategic dialect to learn.

November 1, 2016

While you are correct since most Armenians are descendants of Genocide survivors, but I am guessing from the flag you display that you are from Artsakh. Your mother tongue is Eastern Armenian. Actually there are many people who can contribute in WA and I know many of them. WA is the endangered one and merits all efforts to keep it alive. It is not only Istanbul Armenians that speak WA but by most Diasporans all over the world (except in Russia) who speak and interact in Western Armenian. Eastern Armenian is only spoken in Armenia, Georgia and Iran. My guess is that the ratio is about 50/50.

With the destruction of the Armenian communities in the Middle East the level of urgency has risen. If we do not all mobilize as a nation to save it, it will be dead within a generation. Like both branches of our language, WA and EA belong to the whole nation, not only to a part of it. Therefore all must work to preserve it, not only just a part.

November 1, 2016

I'm actually based in LA with Yerevanci parents, having nothing to do with Artsax. I simply use it to spread awareness. If you've heard the Artsax dialect, then you would understand that it's in a category of it's own which needs documentation and study in order to preserve it. (I can't understand a word of it!) If you're truly worried about a specific branch of the language, then the Hamshen dialect is the most endangered. Your logic points to this as being the most prime candidate for a possible course.

It should also be noted that there are dialects within the greater WA branch that are in danger too. For example, the dialect of my great-grandparents, Marash, has a maximum of 10 speakers left. If a WA course were to be made, it would do so using the Istanbul dialect. What is to be of these other dialects.

As a side note, as long as the ARF exists, I don't thing WA is going anywhere. And I hope I don't sound offensive, just trying to engage in an interesting conversation;P

November 5, 2016

All dialects of the homeland of depopulated Western Armenia are already dead languages. If there are 10 speakers left in the Marash dialect, the best you can do is record the fact for historical preservation only. There was a time when in a place like Lebanon and in Aleppo, you could actually hear, speak and live in over 40 dialects of Western Armenian. Those are gone forever, and we lost a tremendous treasure. I myself am a speaker of the Dikranagerd dialect, because I grew up with it with my grandmother. That one may still be preserved since it is still spoken, believe it or not in New Jersey and in Diyarbekir itself.

The Hamshenli dialect is a special case, whether it is endangered or not, I do not know.

Dialects should not be confused with languages though. Languages have complete sets of rules, grammars, vocabulary, teaching etc. Yes they may emerge from dialects, but they are not one and the same.

WA is NOT a dialect, it is a branch of the two major ones of the Armenian language. It is OFFICIALLY classified as an endngered language by the UN.

For the record, Western Armenian is not the Istanbul dialect. That would be like saying Eastern Armenian is the Tiflis dialect. Neither of these statements is true.

No comment on the ARF. Arguing that the historical preservation of a language lies with a political party, which does not even operate in the country where WA is spoken, is extremely far-fetched. Unless you are comparing the ARF to the Zionists, who single-handedly resurrected Hebrew and made it a living language of Israel. If what you suggest were true, then WA would not be in the deplorable state it is in. Also, just as a historical reminder, ARF started in Eastern Armenia and all its leaders (well into the 1950s) were Eastern Armenians.

November 6, 2016

Oh viken viken. What else should I hear from other Armenians like you? That they speak 4 different languages which they can speak NA,SA, EA, and WA. That's so cool. Enough with the jokes. I am going to disregard your comment once again and anything else you may say in the future. Because you are just saying and making up random sh** out of thin air. But it's ok, as saying WA is a separate language is ungrounded and has no basis in linguistics. Armenians are gathering here to push for a common cause which is to release Armenian into Duolingo and for us to preserve our language (idgaf which dialect.) Every time we, as a people, rarely united together for a cause, there always has to be that one Armenian (most cases many like you) that just has shift people away from unity, focus, and end goal in mind with some garbage distraction. Again, this is my last comment to you. Go ahead say whatever you want, I am not going to bother with bogus things that has no basis or credibility in terms of linguistics.

November 6, 2016

Well you're proposing a WA course on duolingo. But then if WA is only a categorization tool and branch of the Armenian language and made up of dialects, then which dialect do you propose is taught? There obviously cannot be a WA course because that would only broadly categorize the dialect you aim to teach (Tigranakert?). The Istanbul dialect is the one used to publish everything from newspapers to books and was used in the US as Armenian itself (until the early 2000 I think).

Considering the ARF has a considerable presence in Lebanon, and funds countless projects across the world, it's probably the best tool for spreading WA. Maybe AGBU.

But I have to disagree. The default dialect of WA and EA respectively are the Istanbul and Yerevan dialects. They're the only ones taught and pretty soon all dialects that are somewhat relative are going to merge into those two (if they haven't done so already). I'm so confused as to what you're trying to say in regards to having WA as a course, despite the fact that it's not a language in and of itself.

November 8, 2016

I will not make an emphasis on which dialect Armenian should go with in Duolingo. The truth is that it will all come down on which dialects the contributors, that are selected, speak as you should know that there isn't going to be 2 separate courses for Armenian. Regardless of which ever dialect will take over, Armenian released into the Duolingo Incubator is still going to be an great achievement for Armenians and language learners. On a side note, I am not sure it's a 50/50 as Eastern is spoken in Armenia (most dominant influence), Iran, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Russia whereas Western is spoken in Syria, Turkey, and South America. USA has both depending on geographical locations there. I believe it will not be a problem for Western because even though Eastern is the "official" in Armenia, the Western dialect communities will maintain theirs.

November 1, 2016
  1. There are no Armenians left in Azerbaijan. Artsakh is Armenia.
  2. Western Armenian is spoken also in Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, The Gulf Emirates, Egypt, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Roumania, Jerusalem, France, Austria, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, UK, Australia.
  3. You can have both versions taught. For example, Memrise has both.
  4. I am pleading for Western Armenian on Duolingo. It is the one that is endangered. EA is taught through the state apparatus in Armenia. It will survive. Whereas if all Armenians around the world do not join forces to help WA survive, then it will not. All Armenians, including EA speakers must realize that WA is a national treasure that belongs to them all.
  5. The loss of WA will complete the Genocide. To stop it, we need tools like Duolingo to embrace it. There will be contributors, trust me on that one. I volunteer and can get dozens of others.

Thank you for engaging me.

November 1, 2016

I do agree that both dialects can be taught, it's very possible (even though having 1 would be a miracle.) And I do agree that there is a subliminal Akhpar vs Dantsi thing that exists which should not in the slightest if Armenians want a future. This explains why EA speakers aren't too keen when they hear WA. We're barely 10 million people, if there's a rift because of stupid reasons like accents, it will lead us nowhere. I'm sure this is one thing on which we can agree.

November 5, 2016

Hojinkie I disagree that Duolingo will teach both dialects as they are not into those things. Their primary focus is to release languages, not dialects within a language and that should not be our focus. We should just hope and wait for Duolingo to accept Armenian into the Incubator. Once it is accepted into the Incubator, then the contributors, whoever are selected, will discuss among themselves and decide how to proceed. I won't emphasize nor really care which dialect is selected nor will I bother making a big fuss about it. I agree that this is should be addressed. But no worries, as contributors will discuss and decide which should not really matter as we should all be very happy to see an Armenian course in Duolingo. I agree with your statement on how there are many sub-dialects within WA, how Artsakhi dialect is a separate dialect outside of EA because even I don't understand them, and how Hamsheni dialect is more vulnerable than WA, even though I believe they will continue to exist in their respective regions and communities. As for Viken, I have no comments as I won't dwell into the WA vs EA discussion or which one it "should" be. That is not for us to decide. It is first for Duolingo to decide, as it is they who run this awesome program and decide what language goes into the incubator, and second for the contributors, the ones that are SELECTED as it is they who will volunteering, contributing, and spending countless of hours to make Armenian in Duolingo a reality and a success. May the day come soon that we see Armenian in Duolingo. I can't wait.

November 5, 2016

I would definitely learn Armenian if it were a course. I spoke it a bit when I was a little kid but my dad doesn't remember enough to teach me anymore and there are so few resources., especially for reading and writing.

July 15, 2014

You can find my Memrise course for Western Armenian here: I'm also working for the Eastern Armenian dialect too. The Eastern one will be completed soon! :)

July 18, 2014

i would love to lear how to write and speak this beautiful language, it would be awsome to see an armenian couse here!

January 6, 2016

Much appreciated! You can petition for the course with the link on my profile.

January 7, 2016

I already did! best wishes! I'll be following the armenian couse discussions.

January 7, 2016

Thanks! And good luck with your streak. Very impressive.

January 7, 2016

Thanks! your streak is so good as well! I'm a native spanish and galician speaker, so if you want help with your spanish i could give you some!

January 7, 2016

That's very kind of you. Thank you for the offer, but I live in Los Angeles and get to practice my Spanish on a daily basis.

January 7, 2016

Willing to help! I can speak western and eastern fluently!

August 7, 2014

Make sure to apply here: and include any education you have in either language as well as teaching experience!

August 7, 2014

I applied a while back but havn't heard anything. I am wondering if there is a way to email them to get their attention?

August 8, 2018

Please do!

January 12, 2016

Hi, I would be interested.

May 7, 2017

I'd like to help you with it because I know Armenian very well and I am Armenian :D

October 25, 2014

Please do!

January 12, 2016

New Armenian Discussion Topic!

October 25, 2015

Would love to learn the language,, would be the first to sign up!!!!

October 25, 2015

I need armenian and english

March 16, 2016

I would love to learn Armenian!

June 17, 2016

I'd love to be a part of an Armenian course. I'm Armenian and I am ashamed that I don't know my mother tongue. I'd love to learn it through Dualingo!

September 6, 2016

The primary reason I want to make a course is for Armenians in the same position as you. BTW where are you from?

September 6, 2016

I'm from Bulgaria. I actually grew up as Armenian being my first language, but since I started Bulgarian school, I started being around Bulgarian language and people. With time, I forgot it. Now, whenever I meet relatives, they start talking Armenian and I feel really bad that I don't know it.

September 7, 2016

I would love to know my grandparents language! My dad used to speak armenian to his parents and sisters when he was a child but he forgot most of it as he grew up... Lets learn some Armenian!!!

July 14, 2017

yeah i would learn armenian

August 30, 2017

It doesn't surprise me that there are so many people on here curious about learning the Armenian language. There are far more Armenians today who grew up rarely hearing their native tongue than there are people in the modern nation. My grandfather learned it by ear as a boy, both his parents spoke it but I don't even know if he can read it. I have tried learning some on another site but eventually it glitched out on me and I got frustrated. I can only remember a few phrases, and I know someday I will go to visit the country as well as the village my great grandfather was from, now in Turkey. Not going to get into the sad history right now but it would make me incredibly happy to see a course added here, not just so that I could try and learn but for all the diaspora who are trying to connect with their heritage and for anyone who is curious about an ancient and distinctly unique language.

February 20, 2019

we need to learn Armeniannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn sometime I just want duolingo to SUS MANA. Inch

August 31, 2017

Ես էլ եմ հայ ու համաձայն եմ ձեր հետշ շատ կուզեի մի հատ էլ հրաշք լեզու ավելանա: I'm from Armenia and I would like to see some people learning Armenian as well. That's really nice language, try it!!))

October 6, 2017

Make Duolingo even greater by adding Armenian. As for the pic, since Mount Ararat is in Turkey, I think the Matenadaran could be a great option. It's a library in Yerevan holding ancient manuscripts in diverse languages, Duolingo is like Matenadaran, a huge online interactive library allowing us to learn langauges :D Hope you like the idea ;)

December 29, 2017

Actually I'm starting to get a little interested in Armenian so I would love a duolingo course to be able to try it out and get a feel for how the language works.

January 28, 2018

i want it

February 9, 2018

Please release an Armenian course!! Such a beautiful language!!

February 12, 2018

I would 100% go through the curriculum if it were added. I have been looking for ways to learn Armenian.

February 13, 2018

I don't know Armenian, but I have a mother that was born in Armenia and speaks the language. She doesn't know how to read it. I live with my mother, uncle, grandmother, and grandfather, who all speak to each other in Armenian. I also live in California, one of the notable regions of the world with a significant number of speakers of Armenian (In comparison to the rest of the world). I would like to learn it so that I may be able to understand Armenian speakers in the home and state, and so that I may be able to read the language (Which shows up more often than most notice in this region). My primary drive behind wanting to learn the language is so that I can teach my mother to read it, but she's hesitant because she doesn't understand the simplicity of "Letter = sound", because in English, a single letter can make over three different sounds. I did want to mention something on the difference between Eastern and Western Armenian. As duolingo courses progress in "Complete these circles to move onto the next circles", it would suck trying to combine them into one course. I'm offering two suggestions (Not demands.) 1: Edit your original post to imply the request of two separate courses, or 2: Edit your original post to imply the request of a change in how the entire process of going through a course works, so that it may support two or more separate paths. Last of all, I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but your petition closed. I don't know if it was by you or by itself.

June 29, 2018

Yes please, let's get Armenian in there ASAP!!

October 9, 2018

YES! I totally agree! Armenian is such a beautiful language. It deserves to be on Duolingo, so that others can learn it as well. There are currently about 8 million Armenians living abroad and not all of them know Armenian. I am also an Armenian living abroad and would LOVE to help.

January 21, 2019

I can see that we are only waiting for others to do it. It has been 4 years this discussion has existed and yet? NO ARMENIAN.... If we want to do this, then we have to start, or we can discuss about this for anothor 4 years.... and still nothing will be done...

January 27, 2019

I've desperately been wanting to learn Armenian for years. It's disappointing to see that after years of campaigning we're still waiting for it to be added. Please, Duolingo, please!

March 3, 2019

This needs more support. I am half Armenian and I would like to learn the language. Make it happen!

March 15, 2019

I am currently looking for an Armenian language app for my Niece. She is very much interested in learning the language of my ancestors. My family spoke Western Armenian... so not sure how Duolingo would accommodate that with the various dialogs! I am currently using Duolingo for learning other languages and I LOVE Duolingo! Its a great app!

April 17, 2019

Please Duolingo!!! There are so many people that want to learn Armenian, please make it happen. This discussion has been going on for at least 4 years and nothing has changed. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that would want Armenian to be an option on Duolingo.

April 17, 2019

I've been learning about my Armenian heritage and I would love to learn Armenian. Please @duolingo add it!

May 1, 2019

I'm 1/4 Armenian and I've wanted to connect with my heritage by learning the language for a while now; another 1/2 of me is Celtic, so I'm learning Irish through Duolingo and I've used Duolingo in the past to practice French and Spanish and so far I love the way Duolingo teaches, it's really easy to learn with this program. I'd love it if they added Armenian!

May 22, 2019

I am Armenian. I live in Armenia and 3M Armenians do so, but majority of Armenians (9M of them) live outside of Armenia and they usually try to keep the language so they are having harsh time finding Armenian schools or Armenian after class lessons. They speak Armenian in their houses but by each generation it becomes harder. I believe having an Armenian course in Duolingo will boost they learning curve and it will be really popular abroad. Basically there are Armenians everywhere (Think of it you probably know some of them).

July 8, 2019

I hear ya. Im sure even some Americans are mixed with Armenian blood. I know I have some. Not to mention how beautiful the language is.

July 8, 2019

You have Armenian friends or Armenian blood ? Sorry didn't got that part :D

Oh thanks.. I am pleased to hear that people like Armenian language)

July 8, 2019

My great grandma was Sicilian, but the DNA test I took said I am thinking somewhere along the line they immagrated from Armenia to Sicily. I also went to college with two Armenian brothers and people miatakened me as a sibling. Which was awesome! But yes I love the language and the script is gorgeous.

July 8, 2019

I see !) Everywhone is a bit Armenian as we say here :D Cool then I hope We will have a chance to have Armenian in Duolingo so you can check it out))

July 8, 2019

Haha! You and some Armenians should suggest it. To me Armenians and Georgians seem to be the most friendly. But I went to school with a lot of Asians and polynesians.

July 8, 2019

We are doing ! I have asked in Several FB groups to come up with the link and vote for adding Armenian)

I appreciate that you have that vision of Armenians and Georgians !) Feels good :D Let me know if you will ever be in Armenia I will show you around )

July 9, 2019

I would really like to learn. It is very hard to learn it by yourself...

July 13, 2019

It can be hard to learn if you cant find vocal examples. The alphabet is hard...but Hebrew i feel was harder, alphabet wise. No vowels and the lessons didn't teach you the nikkud or vowel system. We need to upvote Armenian and Georgian. There are no Caucasus languages yet in duolingo.

July 14, 2019

I've also been waiting for Duolingo to add Armenian, but I discovered recently the free app "AyoLingo" that teaches Eastern Armenian, thought I would share ! And even if the app doesn't teach the alphabet, I think they will add it soon. In the meantime it teaches a lot of everyday phrases and is nicely made :) I was already speaking a bit of Armenian when I started so I don't know how helpful it is when you start from scratch but you can always give it a shot !!

September 1, 2019

As a lover of language marrying into an Armenian family, I know many people who don’t speak Armenian and would benefit from its inclusion on Duolingo. I’d love to learn more about the language and use it for, as would my fiancée and her sister, many of their family and friends, etc...

July 30, 2019

I'd LOVE to learn the language!

June 30, 2014

Parev! Everyone interested in an Armenian course on Duolingo should vote for Armenian on the continuous language poll! The more votes we get the more likely the Duolingo team will notice us!

June 30, 2014

Sure, I'd like for there to be an Armenian course here. I'll vote for it on the continuous poll.

If you're looking for potential contributors/co-moderators, you can try these forums, if you don't already know about them: (more specifically the section Լեզուներ)

Ջերմ բարևներ

July 1, 2014

And also since next year will be the 100th year since the Armenian Genocide, it would be great if Duolingo would add Armenian soon...

July 1, 2014

Hey if you guys are interested you can go straight into making the language with the incubator. Unfortunately I cannot help because I do not know how to speak despite being Armenian (I blame my father for depriving me). But for those who are willing enough to make a course I will leave the link to apply for starting the Armenian course here: Please I really want to know how to speak Armenian, it'd be a great pleasure if someone can take the reigns and show the world our pride.

July 9, 2014

I would love to try to help you learn Armenian and I'm sure other Armenians will too. We're just waiting for Duolingo's decision.

February 24, 2015

That's great, Akhper! But I have to get an okay from the Duolingo staff before it gets put into the incubator. All we can do is sit around eating ghavurma in the meantime.

July 13, 2014

Totally down! Its unfortunate that we have to wait but at least we now know where to start xD

July 13, 2014

[deactivated user]

I can help you in Facebook.

    August 18, 2017

Parev! Totally agree! I grew up speaking Armenian but I have very few opportunities to practice it. I'd love to get it back!

I'm actually very interested in learning Armenian. Although currently I am working on becoming fluent in Italian... I am always excited to check out new languages to learn

    June 27, 2016

Please make an Eastern Armenian course duolingo!

There is literally NO other way to learn Armenian.. no rosetta stone, no online courses, nothing. Only one company (Pimsleur) offers 3 cds that wont even get you through the basics.

    July 9, 2016

There are some Peace Corps courses for Armenian, but since I didn't try them yet I don't know how practical they are:

    February 28, 2017

I have Armenian heritage and am interested in learning the language. Only things I can say are Inchbes es and ❤❤❤❤ lav. I would love for it to be added.

    July 10, 2016

you should start your Armenian conversation from barev(parev) which means hi :) Adding Armenian would be good opportunity to show the whole beauty of my native language:)

    July 12, 2016

    Yes it would!

    July 16, 2016

I would like to speak to some friends in their native tongue, I would be SOOOO grateful if duolingo-armenian-speakers could hatch the course, with the alphabet and everything !!!!

    September 3, 2016

I would love to learn Armenian

    September 25, 2016

I use duolingo for French and would love to have it for Armenian as well. I am Armenian and seriously need to improve upon my knowledge of both Eastern and Western. Either would be welcome. Please make this happen!

    September 27, 2016

I've been wanting to learn Armenian, but sadly good resources are hard to come by. Having Armenian on Duolingo would make it a lot easier to get started.

    October 22, 2016

I'd like to learn it also ! My gf is Armenian ! I'm looking forward to seeing it here !!!!!!!

    October 24, 2016

My boyfriend is Armenian and is a first generation american. His parents speak english and armenian fluently but his grandparents speak very little english. I have tried to find a good website to learn western Armenian but I can't seem to find any. I have been a member of duolingo for over a year now and would love it if they added western and eastern armenian to their languages!

    October 24, 2016

    I vouch for this!

    January 8, 2017

Yes please add Armenian! I can speak and understand it, not very fluently, but I cannot read Armenian at all...I would love to have a Duolingo course on Armenian so I could learn the grammar and practice reading it and writing it...please put an Armenian course

    January 11, 2017

I'd love to help out during the creation phases

    May 19, 2017

I wrote to Duolingo a while ago but they never answered me. I am an Armenian American and I hope to have Duolingo add Armenian. I want to learn it to connect with my culture.

    May 31, 2017

Yes please! Armenian and its alphabet interest me. I'd love to learn it.

    June 26, 2017

Armenian is my first language and I only really spoke with my tatik and papik but since they've passed, I haven't had much practice. I'd really like to become fluent again as I've forgotten much of what I learned as a child. Please duolingo!! put eastern Armenian on here! and I am sure western Armenians will want their dialect on here too. Our culture is so rarely recognized, this would be big for us.

I am Armenian. I tried incubator, but I do not know what and how do then. Where I must translate, make, write Armenian and English words. I want to add Armenian in duolingo. Just as we say in Armenian "Spring would not come by 1 flower". Let's have contact in Facebook and decide how to work.

      [deactivated user]

Hi everyone! I am italian and i wish to learn Armenian with Duolingo!!

        September 1, 2017

yeeeees please I want to learn eastern armenian :)

        September 2, 2017

Throwing my vote in, I'd love to learn Armenian!!

Seems like there is no shortage of willing contributors, and no shortage of willing learners, so what's the problem?

Come on Duolingo, make it happen!

        September 3, 2017

I would like to learn as well!

The links for voting for it all seem to be broken, but it's still not a course. :(

        September 19, 2017

I wrote to Duolingo about this issue and I will write again. I want to learn this language so much! We need to keep this language alive here in America so that we can stay connected to our culture.

        September 19, 2017

        September 21, 2017

Although I'm not Armenian but I have many Armenian friends in Lebanon. Armenian is a really beautiful language and I would love to be able to communicate with my friends in their native language which is the Western Armenian. I hope this course becomes a reality because Western Armenian courses are scarce and incomplete so it would be great if someone did a complete course that's available for all the people around the world. Go Armenia!

        October 5, 2017

Hi, I am Armenian and I am ready to help those who want to learn Armenian.

        October 17, 2017

Hi, I'd like to learn, you speak Eastern or Western Armenian?

        December 29, 2017

Hi I'm interested in learning Eastern Armenian. until there will be a course in duo, i would like if you could recommand on (or create) a group on facebook/discord/slack ect. thanks :)

        October 23, 2017

        I LOVE armenian. yesyesyesyesss

        November 5, 2017

I am a fluent Armenian speaker I have known Armenian since I was 1 and I have just recently graduated from Armenian school. I also know fluent French and Greek and I am learning Arabic and Russian from my father and dede. I think it is a good idea to teach others about our language and how important it is to us.

        December 4, 2017

you speak Eastern Armenian? I'm French native speaker ;)

        December 29, 2017

I think it would be every beneficial to duolingo if they added Armenian. I know Armenian, and can speak it, but I would like to improve. There are a lot of Armenians that dont know Armenian so it would get a lot of interest. Also it's hard to find websites that teach Armenian especially for free. I speak Western Armenian, but i would love to see both Eastern and Western Armenian added. Its a shame we Armenians get ignored as much as we do since our culture is so beautiful and rich.

        February 14, 2018

Can anyone explain me why we can learn high valeryan but not armenian?!?!?! This is pissing me off sooo much! My boyfriend's armenian and I really wanna learn the language so it would be easier tohave a discussion with his parents/family since they mostly speak armenian between them. PLEASE SOMEONE!! I NEED THIS!

        March 4, 2018

It's time to look elsewhere for sources, mate. Duolingo adding Armenian in the near future is extremely unlikely, sadly.

        March 7, 2018

It has been 3 years and i’m still waiting...

        March 17, 2018

I'm actually armenian but i don't have a very good grasp of the language ;(

        April 6, 2018

I would love to see Armenian in the Incubator, but sadly, I think it will take a while.

I want to learn Armenian. I’ve been reading a lot about the ancient and present culture lately. The language is beautiful. Please add Armenian, Duo!

        September 25, 2018

There is Klingon on Duolingo but not Armenian. Something is wrong

        October 4, 2018

We need this! We want this!!

        October 15, 2018

Is there any hope that duolingo will introduce Armenian ?

        October 23, 2018

I would love to learn Armenian!

        October 24, 2018

I would definitely love to learn this.

        November 4, 2018

        November 21, 2018

I vote for it !! I'd be eager to learn some Armenian !!

        December 5, 2018

yES! I'm Armenian but I still can't speak Armenian, and it's a struggle to find reliable, good Armenian teaching online. It looks like there are a lot of people willing to contribute, and it'll probably gain more support if it goes into the incubator! This post is old, but all the support we can give will only help!! I know my siblings, who also haven't been taught, would want to learn as well. I want to reconnect with my roots and this is the best way I know how!

        December 9, 2018

i want the language now!!!!!!!!! western preferably

        January 8, 2019

I know how to speak and I am originally from Armenia

        January 9, 2019

Hi, I would with pleasure learn Armenian - my parents language.

        January 15, 2019

I think it would quite fun to learn Armenian.

        January 26, 2019

I hope to learn Armenian and would love to have an Armenian course on here!

        January 29, 2019

Please add Eastern Armenian to Duolingo! I would use it often and it would be very helpful. I also know of many people who would start using Duolingo to learn armenian.

        February 7, 2019

        That would be amazing!

        February 20, 2019

We should definitely add armenian. I would use it everyday and I know many people who also would. Eastern Armenian is more common so I would suggest adding it.

        February 20, 2019

Was upset to find out there wasn't one already offered. Although my family is from Armenia before the Armenian Holocaust, I would love to learn it!

        March 21, 2019

Would love to see this language added for those who want to learn it.

        April 6, 2019

I'm Armenian and soon I will be marrying a non-Armenian man who really wants to learn my language. I'm trying my best to teach him and he's found an app but it's not really good. I think Duolingo would be the perfect way for him to get some consistent learning that we could develop together. Considering how many Armenians there are in the world, many of whom are born outside of Armenia and might have difficulties learning the language, there really should be an Armenian course in the app!

        April 17, 2019

I am from the UK and am very interested in Armenian culture, I wanted to learn the language for a long while. Duolingo would be good as it's difficult to find a good quality course online.

        April 17, 2019

Always looking to improve my Armenian!

        May 2, 2019

Try AYOLingo It’s great. You won’t need Duolingo then.

        June 24, 2019

Thanks dude bro I’ll try it then

        June 24, 2019

I am Armenian. I live in Armenia and 3M Armenians do so, but majority of Armenians (9M of them) live outside of Armenia and they usually try to keep the language so they are having harsh time finding Armenian schools or Armenian after class lessons. They speak Armenian in their houses but by each generation it becomes harder. I believe having an Armenian course in Duolingo will boost they learning curve and it will be really popular abroad. Basically there are Armenians everywhere (Think of it you probably know some of them).

        July 8, 2019

I would be very interested to have Armenian on the app.

        August 3, 2019

I want Armenian!! Because I'm from Australia, and if you don't know, one of our premiers is Gladys Berejiklian, and she's Armenian. If she's still alive by the time I complete the "Armenian Course" (ha ha, pun alert), well.... you know.

        August 10, 2019

I would LOVE to learn Armenian. I have always wanted to connect to my culture through language. Duolingo is fantastic, I have learned more than I ever thought possible. I'm sure they will offer it at some point.

        To Hovhannes16

Insulting me or using abusive language will not change facts.

Fact 1: WA is a distinct STANDARDIZED branch of the Armenian language. If you are an expert in linguistics, you will know what that means. Fact 2: Historically Western Armenian was formed out of the dialects spoken in the Ottoman Empire, and was first formalized into linguistic form by the Mekhitarist order of Venice. Yes, it was mostly inspired by the Istanbul dialect (about 2/3), but it included many other dialects spoken in the Ottoman Empire, including the ones in Cilicia, in Medz Hayk and so on. Fact 3: WA is classified as endangered by the UNESCO, whether you like it or not. EA is not. Fact 4: I pleaded for WA on Duolingo because of fact 3. Not because I want to divide any Armenian initiative. You say that you ydgaf (your words not mine), well you should. You have two arms, one left and one right. If you are about to lose one to amputation and it can be saved, would you concentrate your efforts to be able to save it, or would you rather focus on developing muscles in the other healthy arm? If you really dgaf (your words not mine) then maybe others do. Why do you consider me a divisive voice for bringing up the issue? Fact 5: Most of the issues of EA and WA as well as a political reference to the ARF (Armenian political party operating in the Diasporas) were brought up by Hojinkie, not me. I simply responded to his comments. I do not look at this discussion as to who wins out. EA and WA are part of the human heritage and an integral part of our identity as a people. Both belong to me and you as national cultural treasures. I love them equally, as you probably do as well. If WA is lost forever, all of us lose. What are you doing to preserve it?

        November 7, 2016

I guess we are misunderstanding each other because of technical definitions. This is what I understand.

When you say teach Armenian. I understand, teach one of the standardized language forms of Armenian (the same applies for any language).

There are two standardized forms of the Armenian language. Western Armenian (WA) and Eastern Armenian. (EA). I call them the two branches of the Armenian language. You can teach one, teach the other or you can teach both. They are mutually intelligible and have a common origin, but they have differences in grammatical rules.

You say that Western Armenian is the Istanbul dialect, I disagree, because WA was developed as a standardized form having as input many of the spoken dialects in the Ottoman Empire, not just Istanbul. But that is NOT IMPORTANT. When I say teach WA, I do not mean to teach the actual dialect of a region. I mean to teach the full standardized version of the language. If you say that it is one and the same as the Istanbul dialect (I do not know where you get your information for this), then that is fine. You can call it whatever you want. But I am not trying to teach anything else than the standardized form of WA.

Once again, you are talking about ARF and AGBU as being custodians of WA. The fact that these organisations exist means nothing. WA is classified as an endangered language by the UN even when these organizations exist. And by the way, none of these organizations have language preservation in their missions. Your argument is moot. The same thing can be said of the government of Armenia. You can say that they are the best people to preserve EA so therefore there is no need to teach EA. So why bother having any Armenian taught on Duolingo? Do we say that the Academie Francaise is the one that has the mandate to preserve French so we should not teach French? Of course we don't. How can you hold that position for WA?

All I am saying is this, if we agree that Duolingo is a good tool to teach Armenian, and if a choice has to be made, then we should mobilize to have that choice to be WA, because that is the one in danger of disappearance. WA will disappear within our lifetime because not enough people will read it, write it and speak it, regardless if there is ARF or AGBU around. EA is under no such threat. I am sure that you could argue that it may be fine for WA to disappear, because Armenian will survive in EA. On that I would disagree with you, because I'd rather have two hands, than have one hand chopped off.

        November 10, 2016

Now I understand your drift. The technical definitions were really confusing and through your description I was able to connect it with the classification of EA to understand what you mean. I read somewhere, can't remember where, years ago that all standardized WA was the Istanbul dialect and it's stayed in the back of my mind until now. I had no idea the Mkhitarist Order was still active and had such an influence. I'm not saying that these organizations are the sole teachers of Western Armenian left in the world. All I'm saying is that if worse comes to worst, then they will step in and never allow WA to go extinct.

I think WA should be kept as an indivisible part of our heritage, but the comparison to having a hand chopped off is ridiculous. I'm sure there's a better metaphor out there somewhere. I don't think WA is going away in the next hundred years, and if it does it is the fault of the people that were too ignorant to teach their children and grandchildren. Ultimately no matter what we decide to do as Armenians, it's not our choice, since the decision is Luis'. I would be ecstatic if a single word of Armenian was taught on this website.

        November 11, 2016

The Mekhitarists have no influence now, and yes they still exist. They HAD great influence historically. They literally created modern Western Armenian by codifying its rules, grammar and vocabulary, by embarking on massive translations of Western world literature, and by teaching in their schools and publishing literature, textbooks, dictionaries etc. By the 1860s and 1870s modern Western Armenian emerged as a full-formed standardized language due to their earlier work and their textbooks were used in the Armenian schools in the Ottoman Empire. In the late 18th century they published the first great Armenian dictionary (Nor Parkirk Haygazyan Lezvi) which even served as a source for the great Adjaryan Etymological Dictionary. They were some of the great linguists of their time and kept pace with the evolution of the science of linguistics in Europe. Father Maurice Avcherian, one of the authors of the dictionary was the teacher of Armenian of Lord Byron. Fr. Avcherian was one of the most erudite linguists of the period in Europe and he was one of those who lay the foundation of the Mekhitarist plan to modernize our language.

You are wrong, the ARF and the AGBU will NOT step in to save anything. Languages go extinct because there are no longer any speakers, writers and users of the language. WA is classified as endangered because its population base it threatened. It will not last a 100 years. We will be lucky if it lasts even fifty. Why do I say that? Well if you know of any Armenian in any community organization, just ask them how easy it is to find anyone to take meeting minutes in Armenian (WA). It will illustrate what I am talking about. In the 1930s, the French Armenian Writers' Association had 63 members. This means that there were 63 registered members who wrote and published in WA in France alone, there may have been more of them who were not registered members. There are not 63 living writers in WA in the whole world today. No Armenian in the Diaspora can even name six let alone sixty plus. The retreat of the WA language is catastrophic.

Thank you for being open-minded. I gave the metaphor of the chopped hand because many argue divisively that it is a situation of WA vs. EA. And yes, I even know some who would rejoice if one won over the other. They see this as a competitive sport. It is not the case. Barouyr Sevag and Hovhanness Toumanyan belong to all Armenians. And so do Vahan Tekeyan and Taniel Varoujan. We will all be poorer if we lose one or the other. I want to sound radical, because I believe that the situation is dire. I do not know how involved you are in community affairs, but I am heavily. I also teach Armenian Studies. I know the Diaspora very well.

I don't know who Luis is, I am guessing that he has some decision making power about the incubator in Duolingo. If that is the case, then I would like to plead for WA to be taught on Duolingo which is an awesome tool. I am ready to contribute to building it. I can get at least 3-4 professionals to help out, and likely even more.

        Paregamoren (in friendship)

Please start a course for Armenian language, I tried to find something out of Duolingo in order to learn but it's quite difficult! So let's give it a try here!!

Hello, I signed the petition on last year and I was wondering if the course is moving forward. I'm not Armenian, but I saw the Kardashians and Conan O'Brien travel to Armenia and it seems like a great place to be. I also used to live in Glendale.

You can check all the courses in progress in the incubator. (Spoiler: it's not under way yet.)

I really hope Duolingo adds Armenian to this course! This language is so important to me and I believe plenty agree that having this course will assist so much with the process! The Armenian language is truly unique and captivating. Please consider adding Armenian to spread the culture!

Qué ha pasado? van más de tres años!!

        March 6, 2018

No sabemos qué va a hacer Duolingo.

        March 7, 2018

171 comments but only 3 upvotes. No wonder this course isn’t in the incubator.

        June 30, 2018

It seems from the votes on your post that many people intentionally downvote it to keep this language from being on duolingo. Maybe even someone making multiple accounts just to do that.

Hello Hojinkie! Did you apply in the incubator and if so, did Duolingo's team respond? I am really interested in Armenian, and I already know quite a bit but I would like to perfect it!

I am half-Lebanese, half-Caribbean Mexican, but the Lebanese side of my family is a mixture of African black, Syrian, Turkish, Egyptian, Persian & Armenian

I would love to learn Armenian East or Western & maybe learn which not only makes me learn about Armenia but more of my Lebanese heritage too

Love it if Duolingo adds Armenian

My mum is Armenian and we visit our relatives in Yerevan every summer. I have been wanting to learn or at least understand a bit of the languge, but its not really a thing anywhere. I would hugely support and join it appearing.
