We're excited to announce that two more Incubator courses have graduated out of beta: English from Romanian and English from Polish. As always, the quality of these courses is as good as the ones developed internally by our team.

Join me in congratulating the awesome contributors for both!

Thanks! I think we only begin to realise how much documentation we will need to do to be able to explain to others the rules of our own language. I mean of course we know our native language, but most of the time we don't think about why something is the way it is, we just know it. It will sure be an interesting and exciting road doing the reverse tree! :)

I know exactly what you mean. Here are my tips:

  • Take a deep breath
  • Take it slow at first
  • Experiment with the new features available to you now.
  • Ping a member of Team Irish or Team Dutch for tips on the new features, we have been using them for a while.

You're exactly right. Everyone knows how to speak their native tongue, but I don't think you truly understand the things you're saying until you look at other languages. Learning German has really made me appreciate all of the intricacies of language and grammar in general.

Welcome to phase 3!
We have.................stability!!! ;)
Just look at us:

Jokes aside (yes, that was a joke...), getting a course to a stable level is not an easy task.

As always, the quality of these courses is as good as the ones developed internally by our team.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder what the metrics when the Original courses were released to the public. I expect that with people getting used to the old system and the various interface as well as lesson changes, it may have initially had metrics that were a bit less than the ones today due to all that Duolingo has learnt thus far.

Anyway, according to the wiki's unofficial estimates, the Romanian (200 days) course beat Polish (251 days) course by 51 days, in terms of graduating.

I guess the Polish just couldn't help themselves and had to use Polish Polish to Polish Polish splendidly. As for the Romanian, I hear vampires might come from there, so maybe they have superhuman powers, and stay up all night sucking all the bad blood out of the Romanian course. :)

Yes, one can only wonder why it didn't graduate sooner. I guess the learners might have run out of garlic and were simply charmed into accepting that the course was good.

At least you have good words to add to your Reverse course, "coffin", "cross", and fangs, and yes I think that would be a very good intro. I just hope you don't give little kids here nightmares. :)

So happy to see a comment like this on the internet. When talking about Romance languages, most people don't even know Romanian exists. Or some people think Romanian is a slavic language, which is even funnier. ^_^

https://www.duolingo.com/Dan_gloriosul

They are not very far from the truth. In fact until XIX century, Romanian was more Slavic (and Turkish) than Romance. With the advent of modernization, we borrowed very much from French and voila, modern Romanian :-)

Wouldn't this make it no more a romance language than English is? I was under the impression that Romanian was derived from Vulgar Latin.

https://www.duolingo.com/Dan_gloriosul

The theory goes that Romanian was originally derived from Latin, then it was strongly influenced by Slavic and Turkish languages (due to their geographical and cultural proximity). BTW, a few centuries ago Romanian alphabet was Cyrillic. And then in a spectacular turn of events, Romanians made an U-turn and tried to embrace Western culture. In linguistic terms, this meant an almost complete overhaul of the language with heavy borrowings from French.

https://www.duolingo.com/tomista

That makes sense, thank you.

https://www.duolingo.com/Finnmark

Well, the base of it is Vulgar Latin, it just has many Slavic and Turkish elements of grammar and high lexical similarity with the languages south of it (South Slavic languages, Turkish and Greek).

I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to every volunteer at Duolingo. Duolingo has truly opened up new worlds for me that I never thought I'd enter. I conservatively estimate that, by using this program to learn Spanish, Portuguese, and French, I will gain the ability to communicate with nearly 880 million people around the world that I wouldn't have been able to talk to before. I'm anxiously awaiting the distant arrival of Romanian and Polish from English so I can learn to communicate with around 74 million MORE people.

That just blows my mind, and it's all possible with amazing volunteers like yourselves. ¡Gracias! Merci beaucoup! Obrigada!

Also, we (learners) don't pay any penny for it, so maybe I have no right to ask this: Are you going to focus on the reverse courses now, right? :-D If so, I wish you all the best, I will be very excited waiting for them.

Congratulations to both teams! How far the incubator has come in such a short time! Congrats to the whole DL Team and community, too, for making the incubator such a vital and vibrant force in expanding language learning opportunities. It is an achievement we may already take for granted, given the clamor for more and more languages. But that clamor is itself a sign that the community now has higher and higher expectations, because the incubator teams have delivered so much.
