I´ve been trying to master the grammar with this type of sentence. In English, we say either, I am wearing xyz, or I have xyz on,, but neither seems to be a transliteration of this sentence. It seems to me to say word for word, XYZ is on me, and yet, that translation was rejected (probably because it is admittedly unnatural). Is my understanding correct?

Yeah, I think that is a good literal translation
