What's the difference between "Don't understand" and "Misunderstand" ?

Hello everyone!

Sometimes I hear people saying those two sentences but, can you explain to me the difference between these two words?

Regards!

When you don't understand something, you do not know what the other person is talking about and do not understand anything. When you misunderstand, you think you know what someone is talking about, but you have understood the wrong information, so what you think you know is incorrect. For example, if someone was trying to explain maths, I might not understand. If my friend told me she'd arrive at six, but I thought she was leaving at six, I've misunderstood. hope you can understand this! I'm not sure I've explained it in the clearest way ;)

And, also, you would say 'can you explain to me' :)
