When to use accusative?

Hi all, I've been learning Esperanto for around a month or so and I still don't quite understand how accusative works. I understand that after all verbs except for esti (to be) there is accusative but I see that in some cases where there are more complicated sentences, that isn't the case. So what are the rules exactly for accusative?

Accusative basically describes the object in the sentence, aka who is receiving the action. For example, in “I am eating an apple”, apple is in the accusative case. Hope my explanation helped.

P.S. If you had some specific complicated sentences in mind, it might be helpful to say what they were.
