"The mice live in the kitchen."

Translation:In culina mures habitant.

December 17, 2019

Several times I have read that word order does not matter in Latin, yet in this case, apparently it does, as my answer -- mures habitant in culina -- was not accepted. Can someone explain why word order matters here?

It's likely that it is not yet an accepted answer. You can report answers that you think should be accepted and the contributors will eventually add them (assuming there are no issues with the suggested answer).

However, word order in Latin does matter, but is definitely freer than English. Different word orders can place emphasis on different words. And there are situations were words cannot be separated without changing meaning or making an incorrect sentence.
