Il avait lié à ce succès à la chance.

I don't understand why the first "à" is there. It may be a beta oddity but I wondered if it was a set expression or just a different construction from English:

lier à X à Y

Can anyone shed any light, please?

I agree it sounds rubbish. "Il avait lié [à] ce succès à la chance." makes more sense: "He put this success down to luck".

Thanks, 1km.
