Not getting audio for sample sentences, only getting sound FX for right and wrong answers
I just started the Japanese course last week, everything was fine at first, after I had completed a few sections, I noticed that I was not getting the audio for the sample questions anymore. I thought maybe it was just a limitation of the Japanese course, but I just switched to Spanish, and I'm not getting it there either, and I know that one works as I've gotten quite far in the course.
To clarify - I mean that when I am going through a section, and the sample sentence that you're translating is shown, and there is the blue and white speaker button to the left that normally you click and you can hear the sentence spoken, when I click that button, no sound plays anymore. But the right answer and wrong answer sounds DO still play through my speakers. So it seems to be an isolated issue?
I've tried 3 different browsers - Opera, where I started, where it originally worked, Chrome, and now Firefox. None of them are giving me sentence audio.
I'm wondering if one of the times I clicked "can't listen right now" in the Japanese course, maybe it glitched and permanently turned off that audio for my account? Once again, I'm still getting the sound FX for right and wrong answers, but the speaker button and turtle buttons don't yield any sound when I click them for either Spanish or Japanese.
What can I do? Maybe try clearing my cache?

Speaker OFF just controls the auto-play of the sentences on the left side.
You can turn it ON here: https://www.duolingo.com/settings

What does the "Ctrl + Space" hotkey do?
Is there silence too?

How does your system look like which you are using for Duolingo?
Computer? Windows? MacOS?
Do you use recent browser versions in full desktop mode on a computer or on a smartphone/tablet device?
Recently when I tried out the Spanish from English initial placement on a Windows computer with an older Firefox version I noticed that the audio is much more stuttered than for my Portuguese from English course.
I am not sure why there is a noticable difference and what this does mean for the audio service or 3rd party TTS libraries...
Maybe this is also a server issue where the sounds are downloaded from??
If you want to be sure that it is not related to specific Duolingo courses like JP or ES I would recommend to add another course like German or Portuguese (BR) and do the first lessons on the Basic skills.
But it is not like that I would have got totally no Spanish audio.
The sentence just didn't finish playing correctly; "Ctrl + Space" worked in my case.
As I said, this was on a Windows system.
I can try another (Windows) computer with more recent Google Chrome V77-V79 or Mozilla Firefox Quantum (V68-V70) versions.
Q: Are you using Firefox or Chrome on a mobile device?
You know, soooo many people have been complaining about different audio issues in the past weeks....it probably is not your side.
I just tried on my phone, and it's working correctly there (I don't like using duo on mobile devices as it tends to lag much more)
I am using a windows desktop with full screen browser window yes, and everything should either be newest version or maybe one version old. This does seem to suggest an issue specific to this computer though.

Yes, either this, or try to create a new user profile in Firefox browser.
Maybe not to use the VERY latest versions of Chrome or Firefox....just wildly guessing on this point as staff might not have tested them already.
Recent browser versions (1-2 versions back) of both should be fine..
......as I said it because of system OS / hardware restrictions I am using a much older version of Firefox V52.9.0esr which has a lot of other issues with the Duolingo web UI on a computer since 2019 (and not in 2016-2018 before) but is still able to play the sound for my three main courses:
Are you sure you have not changed anything with your sound drives / Windows updates, etc.?
As you said, you basically hear the bing sound...just not the sentence audio.
How does Mondly (free 365 lessons in an unlocked topic), Memrise or Lingvist behave on your computer? All good?
I have the same issue in Duolingo Android app in Chinese course. After some quick forum search it seems that this is an old issue (more than few years) and we just have to live with it. Perhaps it's some broken audio file in cache that temporarily borks sound input or something else entirely.
Hi same here with German I used to go from lesson to the next without any problem until couple of month ago for 74 days straight and not encountering any (and I mean any) problem whatsoever I didn't even know this problem exists. now I can't listen to any pronunciation but sound effects or OK I have tried with chrome, Firefox and even IE all other websites are completely fine my settings are correct I can hear the pronunciation in the stories, I haven't tamper with any sound setting on my computer since the last time I was here. the problem persists to android browsers (like UC browser and chrome) and even app so I'm somewhat this is on Duolingo. I have filled a bug report but if anybody has any suggestion or explanation, I would appreciate it. thanks
