I'm noticing some single-letter mistakes being passed as right, without even a note about a typo. I answered "Dè an aois a tha e?" which clearly isn't correct, but it was marked right without any qualification at all.

Yes. Recently I wrote she instead of he and it accepted it. Duolingo uses some clever algorithm for determining what is an acceptable mistake. It does not seem that the course writers can control it. It is bad in your example and mine, and bad at lenition. It almost always allows the wrong mutation in Welsh.
