Yes it should be. Just to clarify:

  • il sindaco = mayor / i sindaci = mayors
  • il sindacato = union / i sindacati = unions

DL does not accept "The unions know". I think DL is wrong to reject it, when Italians say "I know" they say "Lo so" and it seems that construction would also be used in this phrase. Any comments?

Agreed. DL always requires us to write "know IT" if lo is in the sentence.. Even if it sounds clunky in English.
