The in universe story goes that the war syllable probably has nothing to do with "war" and the nagh syllable probably has nothing to do with "nog", but when Federation Standard speakers first heard a Klingon say the word it sounded like "war-nog" and seemed an appropriate title for the drink, so the translation stuck even though it does not really relate to the actual etymology of the Klingon word. In fact, Federation linguists seem to be satisfied enough with the analogy, that I cannot find any evidence of anyone having uncovered the actual etymology of the word.
