I put "the crib for my son is small" and Duolingo said it was wrong showing "the crib of my son is small" as correct. What in the world does the crib of my son mean??? I do understand that my son's crib would also be correct, but the crib for my son would be proper English also

Why don't you do something about my son's cot. He doesn't sleep in a crib in England

As I understand it, a crib is a little bed with walls that a baby sleeps in basically whereas a cot is a simple, utilitarian "bed" that you find on navy ships and in places where people have run out of room or need a temporary solution.

The Oxford English Dictionary defines cot as: "A small bed with high barred sides for a baby or very young child."
