Hold it!

First, we're bringing the following two threads to your attention, which may be of help as you progress through the Dutch course and communicate with other Dutch students:

  1. A thread that provides you with an overview of grammar information.
  2. A thread that provides you with the instructions for discussing sentences.

Content

  1. Word of thanks
  2. The Dutch forum
  3. Tips and Notes Legend
  4. Voice disclaimer
  5. Dutch (Netherlands)
  6. Suggestions
  7. Constructive criticism

1. Word of thanks

Finally our Dutch course is out in beta! Hurray (Hoera)!! We are thankful to Duolingo for giving us the opportunity to build this course for you guys and also appreciate the patience you’ve had these last couple of weeks (or even months!). Please continue to be patient as we improve the course. Needless to say, a course that is just released into beta is a diamond in the rough and we need your help to make it into the shining gem that it can, and should, be!

2. The Dutch forum

The Dutch forum works like any other: we have the general discussion, the English discussion and a troubleshooting forum. Mind that the right content is posted in the right places. You can change the forum in which your thread is placed by going to ‘edit post’ and selecting another subforum. Of course, whenever you post, make sure to follow Duolingo’s guidelines. Those that do not follow the guidelines will be removed. The Dutch team monitoring the forum consists of us five: KaiEngle, kirlll, Rhynn, KevinKnauer and Lavinae.

3. Tips and Notes Legend

As you may have already noticed, the tips and notes we've provided consist of many different colors. Luckily, there's a reason behind it. Here you can find a list of what the colors indicate:

  1. black = neutral, just text
  2. orange = a Dutch word
  3. blue = an English word
  4. green = a prefix
  5. red = a suffix

4. Voice disclaimer

We are aware that the voice used in the exercises for this course is not perfect. We were actually expecting the implementation of another voice, but due to technical reasons this could not be done. As a result, the voice you hear is a previous version of the one we were originally going for. We do find this voice problematic in certain cases, but a better voice is currently unavailable. At least the voice that you’ll be hearing now resembles that of our former queen Beatrix. How cool is that? ;)

When you come across the flawed pronunciation of sentences, mind that fixing pronunciation issues takes time, since it requires Duolingo to go into the system and tweak certain things. So, for now, we’ll have to make do with what we’ve got. :)

Note: We are aware of the difficulty that users are experiencing distinguishing between the use of marked and unmarked pronouns in pronunciation. We cannot fix this problem right now and can only advice you to try and play the audio slowly. Sorry for the inconvenience! ^^"

5. Dutch (Netherlands)

We've received a lot of questions concerning our 'Netherlands' suffix and specification, here and elsewhere. The reason why we need this suffix is because it helps us with dealing with the reports and with making decisions about the material that needs to be included in the course (this primarily concerns the best translations and expressions used).

Note that while much of the grammar between the two language areas, the North (the Netherlands) and the South (Belgium) is similar (it is not identical, mind you, which is exactly why there's a language union, for standardizing our Dutch), the preferred expressions and words used in everyday speech differ in many cases. This is what the many reports that we receive only confirm. These differences translate into different best translations.

In short, for our course the suffix is functional. It helps us with building and maintaining our courses (and thus with maintaining the quality of our course). This has especially proven to be the case with the English for Dutch speakers course. :)

6. Suggestions

Though we usually refer you to our profiles and streams for posting suggestions, due to the buzz around the release of our course, we’d like to get all of your suggestions together in this thread (of course also for the sake of keeping an overview). Mind that we can’t really make many changes that are not on the sentence level, just after the course’s release into beta. Since we can’t just implement changes without much tweaking and certainly not soon, the implementation of certain suggestions may take a while. Thus, what we’re doing is giving you the opportunity to post your suggestions in one place, and we will check these once in a while.

7. Constructive criticism

You are of course free to post your constructive criticism in the forums. However, if we deem the criticism you provide as being unconstructive and downright hurtful, we reserve the right to lock and/or delete your thread. We’d also really like to know which parts of the course you really like! So, naturally, we’re looking forward to threads of appreciation as well. :)

Best wishes,

Team Dutch
KaiEngle, KevinKnauer, Lenkvist, Rhynn, Simius and Lavinae

Hey, just some constructive criticism: The Dutch word for Dutch is Nederlands.

4/10/2015, 2:24:52 PM

Ik ben een man. Ik woon in een thuis met mijn kat.

4/28/2015, 8:30:42 PM

Dutch don't say that you're in your thuis. They say that you are thuis (at home) and in your huis (house/home). I hope you understand my explanation!

5/7/2015, 10:58:48 AM

https://www.duolingo.com/DiggityDoggity

i forgot :) ik spreken nederlands

5/12/2015, 2:33:14 AM

https://www.duolingo.com/Bruce_OBrien

Ik spreek Nederlands – omdat jij gebruikt het woord ik, het is de stam van de werkwoord – welk is de volle werkwoord dan verwijdert jij de "en"

volle werkwoord – spreken – als jij verwijdert de "en" – jij krijgt sprek – omdat het woord spreken heeft een lang klinker geluid en sprek heeft een kort klinker geluid jij hebt aan dubbel de klinker nodig. Dus sprek is nu spreek wordt – zo het zegswijze is. – Ik spreek Nederlands.

English translation

Ik spreek Nederlands – because you used the word Ik, it is the stem of the verb – which is the full verb than you remove the "en."

Full verb – spreken – if you remove the "en" – you get sprek, because spreken has a long vowel sound and sprek has a short vowel, you need to double the vowel. So sprek now becomes spreek – so the phrase is. – Ik spreek Nederlands.

I hope I have written the explanation correctly in Dutch, I also find it difficult trying to explain it in English.

Hoi La_w8. My naam is Tuesdae. Engels: I seems like you said: "I have a sinas Apple. I drink milk...( note: I forgot what niet or maar meant????). I speak English" What book do you recommend for Dutch grammur? Also, is there U.S. PEL Education Government grants for Dutch or learning a language?

9/1/2017, 3:27:32 PM

https://www.duolingo.com/lil.lou

Goedemorgen, Tuesdae! In Dutch I said "I am an orange, I do not drink milk but I speak English." "Niet" is "not" and "maar" is "but". I actually don't read any Dutch grammar books, although I probably should. If you have any Dutch immigrant friends, try talking to them in their language (if they don't mind!).
When you become more advanced in Dutch, you could try reading Dutch children's books, it's really fun to see how much you can understand :) Practice makes perfect, I wish you good luck on your Dutch learning journey!

If you don't mind, I as a native Dutch speaker think it would sound better if you said: Ik drink 'geen' melk instead of Ik drink melk niet. Both are correct but I haven't ever heard anyone say the last one. Also, Sinaasappel with 3 A's

9/3/2017, 5:56:22 AM

In Afrikaans it's "Ek drink nie melk nie." Do you have a clue where that double no comes from?

That makes sense. Thank you so much!

9/4/2017, 3:44:40 PM

I'm a native English speaker (American) and have been learning Dutch for about six years. I didn't know that to say 'ik drink melk niet' was correct. Everything I've read is that 'geen' is used with a noun. Dutch is a very difficult language to learn, but then, I've heard that English is difficult, as well. Thanks for the info.

Will more skills be added over time? Are there any skills you are planning to add?

Also if you add a bonus skill for flirting, please don't make all of the things that it teaches you things that seem like they will get you maced if you are not talking to a hooker... The portuguese one had things like "are you looking for good company" (and yes native speakers confirmed that you shouldn't say that to people in Portuguese either)...

To the best of our knowledge, new words are in fact highlighted.
We actually just tested this with another account as well.

If you still cannot see these highlights, it might be worth asking your question in the troubleshooting forum. Course experts have no control over course features, just the sentences, translations, skills and lessons.

@DiggityDoggity hebben is an irregular verb. (to have is irregular in English too.) heb is for first person singular (I have in English, ik heb in Dutch), hebt is second person singular (you have in English, jij hebt in Dutch). heeft is for third person singular (he has in English, hij, zij/ze [she], hij heeft in Dutch). hebben is for all plural forms (we/you/they have in English, wij/we, jullie, zij/ze [they], wij hebben in Dutch). Note that zij/ze can mean either she or they and you have to look at the verb to work out which one it is! In English a lot of verbs end in "s" for the third person singular (he/she reads). In Dutch it is similar except a lot of the second and third person singular verbs end in "t" for statements and just third person singular for questions. So for lezen (to read) it is ik lees / lees ik?, jij leest / lees jij?, hij/zij leest / leest hij/zij? (wij/jullie/zij lezen / lezen wij/jullie/zij?). It gets easier once you know more regular verbs. So, general rule of thumb: if it ends in "-en" it is a plural form (any person), if it ends in "-t" (when you know there is a form without it) it is for you [singular] for a statement only or he/she, if it doesn't end in "-t" or "-en" it is either ik (I) or jij (you [singular]) for a question. The exception is for verbs that end in "-ten" such as eten. In this case there are only two forms: eet and eten. Ik eet, jij eet, hij/zij eet, wij eten, jullie eten, zij eten.

What CJ.Dennis said is almost intirely correct, though that, I have a edit and a correction: (in Dutch) it is jij hebt, but if "jij" is for the verb, it is heb jij (so first person singular rule)(also for other verbs). Second: it is not: "jij lees", but "jij leest". Sorry I replied to your post, but I couldn't reply on CJ.Dennis'.

Well done to you all, you deserve praise and thanks - I no not think anyone has an idea of how much work you together have put in to make this possible - I salute you!

after doing the basic skills 1, i find dutch being much more logical in pronunciation than german. And without the the words, like die, der, das, dutch seems more flowing, and i am currently enjoying doing the dutch. as i continue, i will see if dutch is the language for me since i tried french and german and didnt like those languges

Dude, you're gonna LOVE Dutch pronunciation. It's mad regular. Once you get the vowel sounds and the rhythm down, there's not much to it!

Yes... It looks like a nightmare to someone who is new to the language but is actually much easier/logical seeming than german so far.

I grew up speaking Afrikaans, which is basically a dialect of Dutch. I expected to find the Dutch easier than I am doing, but there are some significant differences in grammar. Afrikaans is even more simple than Dutch - no irregular verb conjugations and the same articles for all nouns (die = the and 'n = a) still glad to see dutch on here so I can 'upgrade'. Afrikaans isn't exactly a widely spoken language.

Ja, omdat de sinaasappel afkomstig is uit Zuid-China, waarvandaan de Portugezen hem in de 16e eeuw naar Europa brachten. Zie bijvoorbeeld http://www.etymologiebank.nl/trefwoord/appelsien

Well, I've personally used Rosetta Stone and Duolingo (and a multitude of other resources) and been working on learning Dutch for a year now. Sinaasappel occurs in both Rosetta Stone and Duolingo, I simply assumed it was a citrus apple.

4/10/2015, 2:07:24 PM

https://www.duolingo.com/Stormshad0

Correct! Is that in the course or did you look it up or are you Dutch? In other words, how did you know?

also, do you know why they called it that?

Sinaasappel(orange). In my language Afrikaans lemoen means orange, in Dutch it means lime. Strange!

7/10/2017, 12:40:59 AM

Afrikaans is my first language and I'm still finding the Nederlands difficult. It feels like a long lost sophisticated relative.

7/10/2017, 12:39:12 AM

https://www.duolingo.com/Zhareece

Ahhh agree, Afrikaans is so much easier. Duolingo should add Afrikaans because it's the easiest language in the world for English speakers to learn and it would make it more widely spoken too.

It's too simple. It's considered a children's language by some compared to Dutch. It used to be called a kitchen language.

Dit is nou 'n slim plan. Laat my dink aan die Amerikaners wat Navaho in die tweede wereldoorlog of soiets gebruik het sodat die Duitsers dit nie kon verstaan nie.

Thank you so much for your work on this course! I've immediately noticed how localised the sentences and translations are. My first course is German, and while I understand it was made to familiarize students with word order and basic grammar, it many times felt cold and... textbook-y(?) The Dutch course, however, feels so much warmer and invites to socializing. I can't wait to get to the phrases and skills that truly show your vision you've been working on for this course. Dank jullie wel (I hope I typed it right)!

I have been learning dutch with mostly reading text. This is the first time hearing so much of it at once. Is "een" pronounced similar to how it sounds in the lessons? It sounds really direct like it was said very quickly, and I could see it easily being confused with eet or en.

7/16/2014, 8:44:03 PM

https://www.duolingo.com/Aronvanstek

een/één [accents are for specifying when it's the number] (one) is pronounced "een"(duch phonetic spelling).

een (A/an) is pronounced "unn". So with a schwa. For German speakers I guess it would be something like a short "önn".

Bedankt voor het geweldige werk!

Dutch resembles German a lot, which makes it interesting to study when you know a little "Deutsch" (even this very word looks alike to "dutch")!

Can't wait to finish that module :)

Deutsch is pronounced like "doitch" Dutch is pronounced like... well... "dutch"

10/18/2014, 9:13:26 PM

https://www.duolingo.com/catalina_marina

Also, "Dutch" is not actually a Dutch word, not even close, so your argument doesn't apply. ;)

8/20/2015, 3:16:41 AM

But "Duits" is a Dutch word (it's for "German" not "Dutch") (pronounced roughly "Doubts")

Congrats, Team Dutch! Since there isn't a "U.S." in parentheses after "English" in any case, why does there have to be a "Netherlands" after "Dutch" in every case? Shouldn't the presence of the Dutch flag suffice like the American one does?

I fully agree. I am a native Dutch speaker from Belgium, and though I can say from experience that there are indeed some differences, I believe splitting it up into two separate courses is definitely an overreaction :)

The differences are almost only heard in the spoken language, too: in written form, you almost need be a linguist to be able to tell them apart.

I very much vouch for changing it into just "Dutch".

In spoken form, there are many differences. vowels are pronounced differently, so is the R (Flemish usually roll it, Dutch usually don't), several consonants that Flemish speak in a softer form and Dutch speak in a harder form (G, V, D, ...). Dutch people also speak with more tonal differences - they 'sing' more during speaking :) So in general the accent is different, but then again, the accent differs very much even within each language region too.

Aside of these pronunciation things, there are also actual words that are different in spoken form. For example, most Flemish people would say gij/ge instead of jij/je (e.g. "Ge spreekt Nederlands"), despite the fact that any educated Flemish people will still write the je/jij form.

But the above really is the most of it. Sure, there are some words one uses more than the other, but that's very similar to the differences between British and American English. An example word that the Dutch use and the Flemish would not, is 'hartstikke'. A very popular word for us to use if we want to try and speak with a Dutch accent :) Also several expressions are different, such as they may use words such as "gaaf" and "vet" (which can both mean cool/awesome), while we'd use words like "wijs", "mega", ..?.. (I don't really know actually, we just say "cool" mostly :p )

But in my opinion those differences are quite specialized already. A strong basic course, such as these courses on Duolingo, should not make the distinction.

I'm no language teacher, but: It pretty much always stands in for a subject or object, when you're not making a solid reference to what exactly. You can often think of it as "there" or "it".

Er is wijn. There is wine.

Op de tafel staat er wijn. On the table, there is ('stands') wine.

Voeg er water aan toe. Add water to it.

(Voeg water toe aan de wijn. Add water to the wine. )

Er kan iemand komen. Somebody may come. (there may come someone)

("Iemand kan komen" works, but sounds a bit forced)

But anyway, I suggest you just continue the course. Many things probably become more clear as you use the language more :)

Sygmoral, are you saying it's like saying "right there" in english (you don't need to say right, it's just there and the sentence would mean the same without it)? Or is there a little more to it than that?

You usually can't leave out the "er" though :) Only in very rare cases you can, such as in "In de straat staat [er] een meisje" (just like in English you could say "in the street [there] is a girl").

But in general, if it's there, it really needs to be, or at the very least would make it sound weird if it wasn't.

In the "add water to it" example, there's no way to directly translate that without "er".

Actually, although I'm not sure that your "correction" is technically incorrect, the original, "hoewel ik Nederlands begrijp, ik het toch moeilijk vind" is definitely correct and sounds better and more natural.

Ik vind de onderdelen over eten en over geografie wel heel erg op Nederland gericht en zo specifiek dat het naar mijn mening niet hoort tot de doelstelling van dit soort cursus. Misschien kan je die twee onderdelen in een soort van bonus zetten net als de flirtation, expression and christmas-onderdelen in de andere cursussen.

Dutch seems so close to English at least the beginning sections I have done. The word and 'en' though resembles French 'et' quite a bit. I have been to Nederlands 2x and enjoy Dutch people so its neat to be able to impress them some day instead of using English with them. At least of the sections I have done Dutch is easier than trying to comprehend German. I will stick with it as well as French and Italian as anymore languages will just be confusing. Great job on the work of making a course. Ik ben een Canadian (don't know dutch word yet).

Thank you Dutch team. Learning the basics of Dutch on Duolingo is the closest I'm going to get to my fantasy of living in Amsterdam and going to the Concertgebouw every weekend. The last time I was visiting I bought a copy of Minoes by Annie Schmidt (I'm a children's librarian) and my goal is to read it in a year or so.

I do hope that you'll continue to tinker with the site and make improvements. Keep me posted. Dank u wel!

I've tried learning Dutch out of a book after visiting Amsterdam 2 years ago, with little success and then a friend turned me on to Duolingo and I'm level 8 and rising every day. There are a few wee problems with UK English and American English (I'm sure "broeken" translates into "trousers" because "pants" here means "underpants" or "knickers"!)

My two favourite sentences are:

Mijn boterham is onder een neushoorn

en

Waarom heb jij een eend?

Bedankt!

Thank you so much! This comes at the perfect time for me. One note: you might want to post an update on the incubator page for the course. The last update there makes it sound like even though it shows in beta, it's really not. I kept checking for an update and never saw one. It took me forever to realize that just because I couldn't get it on my phone didn't mean I couldn't get it on my computer, lol. It may seem obvious to some of Duolingo pros, but for a newbie like me, it wasn't.

I've just started the Dutch and have levelled at 7, but what does this mean? How do the hearts work etc? Hope it haven't missed something obvious.

I am new to DUOlingo but I love it! Four out of my six children have also received learning benefits from working in DUOlingo. I am not sure where the appreciation thread is, so I will leave my comment here. Thank you so much (Een haartilijk bedankt) for creating the Dutch course. I have waited for a long time to sink my teeth into learning this language. I have found a few difficulties with distinguishing de from het and various other language colloquisms (I think that's the term), but overall I am so impressed with the work you have done creating the course. I am working hard to advance and practice because I want to get to the professional (health) language areas. For me, its the healthcare field I need to learn to translate when I am working with patients. I do not know what comes after the courses listed (if there are other levels) but I would be so thrilled to see advance practice areas in the course. I am a nurse and need medical terminology, as well as basic assessment phrases. Anyway, all in good time! Again, I thank you and send my kudos. this has been a great learning experience for me. And indeed it is a lot of fun…but you'll find that out by the time you have to say you're an apple and definitely by the time you have to say that in reality you are a turtle.

I agree, but already had extensive German background. French is much harder than the other romance languages.

I think French can be challenging, but sometimes it's quite easy. I also think that some of these sentences that we have to translate from Dutch are ridiculously funny. Pardon, Ik ben een appel. (Excuse me, I'm an apple.)

Thank you to all the contributors! I've been learning German for about 1.5 years now and was waiting so long for the Dutch course. To be honest, German can be both a boon and curse because you sometimes slip up and write ich instead of ik (kind of funny, most of the time) and other things but for the most part it's been een droom compared to German. I'm still not understanding the extra pronouns but it's ok because I'm only learning Nederlands for curiosity and comparisons sake between German and English.

Yes, this is a known issue. We can't fix this however, because we're only course experts. The best thing you can do next time this happens is save a screenshot and post it together with your complaint in the global troubleshooting forum, where the staff can see it. :)

My company is based in SA, but I live and work in the US. THE Afrikaans I hear them speak always sounds like Dutch mixed with English. Now I know why...As a native English speaker who also spreke Deutsch, Dutch is right in between German and English. It is very similar to both (and also to Old English, which is really Anglo-Frisian).

Thanks Lavinae.

I find the Dutch computer voice very pleasant and elegant but when I played it for one of my Dutch friends his response was, "Oh, now I know why your Dutch sounds like German!" (I think that my Dutch sounds like German from studying German for a while many years ago and from listening to Schubert and Brahms songs for 40 years. Not to mention that I'm in Hong Kong and don't hear Dutch spoken very often.)

No complaints, just an observation.

I am very pleased though that when I hit one of my Dutch colleagues with one of my odd Duolingo statements or questions- "Wat voor kleur zijn jouw lakens" or "Mijn opa heeft geen tanden"- I always get a laugh and an appropriate response.

Vriendelijke groeten! JC

Not really. But yes the two languages are very similar for a couple reasons. Dutch is a combination of German and English, which is why it is proven that if you are fluent in German or English Dutch will be the easiest language for you to learn.

Dutch, German, and English also fall under the same language category: Germanic languages. So these languages stem off of German. Other languages in this language category are Swedish, Danish, and Norweigan.

    Hope this helps!

very much so, i love this program. i'm trying out all the languages. it seems like the only problem i'll have is volume control and remembering which language i'm in for spelling. i am seeing the similarities. and i'm loving it, i mean like really loving it, it's inspiring, truly inspiring. yes i do know that when the Russian gets done there will be a completely different alphabet in play then, but i love languages.

Except, of course, that Dutch isn't a combination of English and German; it just shares certain characteristics with them:

Dutch, German, Afrikaans, and Plat, as well as English, Scottish and Frisian are usually considered West-Germanic, forming two groups of closely related languages. The Scandinavian languages, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic, etc. are all considered North-Germanic, and would be slightly more difficult to learn from German or English for not even being in the same branch of Germanic. All Germanic languages as a whole, which includes the extinct East-Germanic branch as well, are thought to stem from a common ancestor, which is usually called "proto-Germanic".

Further away are other language groups, of which three groups widely border the Germanic and lent and borrowed certain words and features: the Romance languages, like French, Spanish, Latin, Portuguese, and Italian, the Celtic languages, like Irish, Welsh, Gaelic, Breton, and Manx, and the Slavic languages, like Russian, Polish, Czech, Croatian and others.

These four language groups, together with four or more related language groups, form the family of Indo-European languages, which as the name implies includes languages spread over India and Europe. This family also includes such languages as Albanian, Finnish, Hungarian, Armenian, Persian, and Hindi; in all some 400 different languages, which can already differ quite a bit.

Even further away are the other language families. The languages of the world are considered to fall into some two hundred different language families. A few of these families contain a large number of languages, like the Greater Niger family (exact name varies), which contains more than a quarter of all languages, while others contain very few, like Basque, a language that forms a family all of its own. The common characteristic of the families, however, is that languages from different families generally have very few features in common.

In all, there are over 6000 languages spoken in the world today, not all of them as yet available on Duolingo. Though the number is a bit large for a chart, I hope the above does give an impression of what languages are quite similar, and which are less so.

I think they decided that there is one Dutch language. Or in other words that the Dutch from Belgium (Flemish) is not decidedly different from the Dutch of the Netherlands. Next would be to introduce a new word in English: "Netherlandish", since Dutch is such a confusing term.

All forms of Dutch are the same language but accent differs and if you understand one you understand the others so it's overreacting to call it Netherlands Dutch.

    3/25/2015, 4:46:20 PM

    https://www.duolingo.com/Bartman49

I would agree that Flemish is just a dialect of Nederlands. When I lived in NL for a sabbatical year, I used to watch a quiz show that pitted a team of 3 Flemish people against a team of 3 Netherlanders on language ( I think it was "Tien voor Taal" if memory serves correctly). The Flems won more often than not. But the lines between different languages, dialect and accent are not always clear demarcations. Some of the local dialects are all but unintelligible to non-speakers. When my office mate spoke Limburghs on the phone with his family, I couldn't get more than the odd word. The same can be said for someone speaking a very heavy Gronings dialect. Many of my coworkers spoke in an Achterhoeks accent, which was difficult for me at first, but I gradually became accustomed to it and understood more. Speakers of "Flemish" on Belgian TV are usually pretty understandable, but your ear has to tune into the accent. What's interesting to me is the commonalities and lack thereof between Afrikaans and Nederlands. The same roots, obviously, but a divergence long enough ago that many different words and grammatical rules have taken hold.

    3/25/2015, 5:08:50 PM

    https://www.duolingo.com/Bartman49

I'm not a linguist, but they way I think of the distinctions in language is the smallest regional separations being accent (mainly pronunciation differences), going to dialect (significant changes in vocabulary in addition to pronunciation differences, to finally, separate languages (many significant vocabulary and spelling differences, as well as grammatical divergence). That is not to say that some separate languages can't have large areas of similarity or even overlap within language "families". Or one could say my "distinctions" are a continuous spectrum rather than discrete levels of separation. So by my taxonomy, Amsterdams, Rotterdams and Hagues are accents, while Gronings, Vlaams/Flemish, Brabants and Achterhoeks are dialects of ABN (algemeen beschaaft Nederlands (general polite Nederlands)) while Vries/Fresian and Afrikaans are divergent enough to be distinct languages. Perhaps a Limburghian could chime in as to whether Limburghs is a dialect or separate language. As a more-or-less native Dutch speaker, I found it to be just as indecipherable to my ear as Vries whereas I can "catch" a fair bit of Afrikaans conversation and even more in writing.

Why don't some sentences have discussions? I want to ask why Fifty is smaller than sixty is not a good translation for Vijftig is minder dan zestig. It seems minder only accepts less or fewer but when you're talking about numbers smaller means exactly the same thing.

Not necessarily. If you say 'fifty is smaller than sixty' you could be refering to size it was written. But if you say 'fifty is less than sixty it makes a lot more sense. Especially for a native speaker.

I am a native English speaker...

If I was talking about the size of the writing I would say "The 50 is smaller than the 60". Once I had said that someone else might reply "No, 50 and 60 are the same size" because the context has been established. Out of context "50 is smaller than 60" would always be understood as the value of the numbers. The reverse works too. In order of personal choice: greater than, larger than, more than, bigger than.

The Phantom Tollbooth (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Phantom_Tollbooth) has a section about taking words too literally. The protagonist, Milo, visits the land of Digitopolis where numbers are considered more important than words. He asks to see the largest number that exists and is shown a huge digit 6 by the Mathemagician. This is humorous because the children reading the book will understand Milo to mean numerically large but will be able to understand the Mathemagician's additional, logically correct but unlikely interpretation of physically large.

I think "smaller than" is quite ok. Note that in Dutch "smaller" is "kleiner". Thus, if the sentence would be "50 is kleiner dan 60" your translation would be more accurate.

Actually... The verb 'drinken' is not 'drinkt' when you say I drink it's the same --> Ik drink. Only the you (single, not plural) and he/she/it have a 't' after the main part of the verb. Ik drink, jij drinkt, hij drinkt. But if turned around with you it is 'Drink jij?' without a t. The we you (plural) and they verbs are the same 'Wij/Jullie/Zij Drinken' This is meant as help ( :

I have been trying to learn another language and have tried Dutch but I don't know if it is the right fit for me. Can I have some feedback on whether or not Dutch is worth learning?

I think every language is worth learning if you have a strong motivation. Thus, I think the answer to your question would lie in what your motivations for learning a new language are. What do you believe are your major reasons for learning one, and why did you decide to study Dutch specifically?

You're on the right track with the flag of nations I see there. Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. More maturer countries, especially sexually.

So you have to learn the local language before you want to be that kind of tourist? That's really hard! I'm not that kind of tourist, too demanding.

Well, in my opinion, if I go to visit a place with a different language of what I speak, I will do my best to communicate in their own language out of respect. Plus it is fun to put into practice what one has learned. Just an update: The few words I learned prior to my trip to Amsterdam, came very handy, especially while my stay at the hospital. I realized not all (the nurses/aids/doctors and patients) spoke English and it was up to me to explain myself to them. I am glad I had some knowledge then and wished I knew more.
