I've always used 'aghaidh' for 'face', from the phrase 'aghaidh ri aghaidh' (face to face), but that might be out of date and/or might be more suitable for landscapes, eg Aghaidh Mhòr (Aviemore). Is 'aodann' more colloquial for a 'boat race' (as the Cockneys would say)?

Colloquially, yes. Although we will accept 'aghaidh' here too :)
