Isn't this also "big toe" (s.)? If so, how - other than context - do you know which it is? (And if it is context, why was I marked wrong?)

It should probably be accepted but usually, अँगूठा by itself refers to the 'thumb' and the big toe is 'पैर का अँगूठा' (thumb of the foot).

It is roughly close to 'angootha'.

If you want to be more technical, the ISO transliteration is aṅgūṭhā or ãgūṭhā (The former stands for the insertion of a velar nasal consonant after 'a' while the latter calls for nasalising the first 'a' vowel itself. Both pronunciations are in vogue).
