Near to Inverness should also be accepted. Near and near to are synonymous in British English.

It is an acceptable answer, is it possible you had a typo elsewhere?

Unlikely, given its only three words, but I can't be certain.

What is the literal translation of Inbhir Nis? Anyone know?

Inbhir is Gaelic for the mouth of a river, so Inbhir Nis is the mouth of the river Ness and Inbhir Àir is the mouth of the river Ayr.
