"I would like a friend."

Translation:Bu toil leam caraid.

What difference in meaning is there in 'I would like' against 'I am wanting'? I guess in English the former is polite. Same in gaelic?

More polite, and also less urgent I guess. If you want something, you are asking for it. If you would like something, you aren't explicitly asking for it, but just expressing your desire for it. Does that make sense?

Makes sense. Thanks
