An endangered Crimean Tatar request. Support, please!

I, with my colleagues, are ready to help with an endangered Crimean Tatar language on Duolingo, so we kindly request the responsible staff to consider adding it.

There are a lot of people of different nationalities who are interested in learning the Crimean Tatar and even more Crimean Tatars themselves. Here are some numbers of the Crimean Tatars all over the world that would benefit from this course:

  • Crimea 246,073
  • Ukraine 30,000–60,000 (excl. Crimea)
  • Uzbekistan 239,000
  • Turkey 150,000-6,000,000
  • Romania 24,137
  • Russia 2,449
  • Bulgaria 1,803
  • Kazakhstan 1,532
  • The United States 7,000
  • comment if you are from another country

Who is also ready to support the addition of this language to Duolingo?

Write in the comments. Let's unite. If you are fluent in Crimean Tatar, please also fill two short forms: this and this.

Qırım. Vatan. Millet! ❤️

Information about the language is available on Wiki.

I would love to help! Count me in!

I have no idea what the Crimean Tatar language is but, here's 25 lingots!

Happy to help!

Edit: 5 more lingots, for good measure.

Thanks a lot for your support! ❤️ Crimean Tatars are from Ukraine.

I love all of Ukraine and although I am studying Ukrainian (my grandmother’s first language), I would not rule out learning Crimean Tatar too. They are Ukrainian brothers and sisters too. Any recommendations on books about Crimean Tatars? Recently I read about Turkish cossacks. Usually I hear of historical conflict between Ukraine and Turkic groups although we are mostly good now. Were the Turkic cossacks Tatar or Turkish? Regardless, let’s preserve Crimean Tatar language.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Matthias, thanks a lot for your support. ❤️ The history of Cossacks is long and complicated. The name itself is Turkic (“free men” or “free riders”), of the same origin as Kazakhs. More about who are Crimean Tatars you can read in this article, for example.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/tommiki

What a great support, lingots... I guess the course will be ready within days now.

Let ıt go from your lips to God's ears.

mrgilesir :) There are 2 Tatar languages. One is Crimean Tatar and the other (that I was learning a little of) is Volga Tatar. It is spoken in Tatarstan and Kazan. I LOVE this language and want to get back into it. I was introduced to it by Russian singer Alsou! :) It was just SOO BEAUTIFUL to me and many people want to learn it. :) I'm GLAD that the lesser known Tatar ( as I don't hear many people speak of it), is getting looked into to being added and I hope there are some that will want to do it. I myself would love a Volga Tatar course on here to help me with what I have learned so far. Just to also let you know they are 2 DIFFERENT languages! One would not understand the other. I hope this helps you understand a LITTLE more about the 2. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/kinpandun

Volga Tatar is spoken by the Tatars in Russia, right? Then I would lile that language available as well. I help care for a young man of Tatar origin that was adopted to the USA from a Russian orphanage. I'm sure he would like to learn more about his heritage that way.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Nul713058

Tracy, may I make a suggestion? I don't mean to be rude but it's a little jarring :) and passive aggresssive :) to put a smiley face :) after every sentence or so :). It's like the overuse of emojis. :) Maybe other people don't have a problem with it, but I do. :) So please use less. :) I like that you're being friendly, though. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/thethirdSo

yes you should adjust your behavior because your use of colons and brackets annoys this gentleman/lady

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/OsmanUA

Crimean Tatar language is really in need of such a course. That would be great to see it here. Millions of Crimean Tatars all over the world would be happy.

P.S.: I have shared, voted up and gave you all my lingots!!!

Hello from Romania, there is also an important Tatar minority in our country, around Constanța! Is their language the same as yours?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Hello from Ukraine! Yes, in Dobrogea there are about 24000 Crimean Tatars. That's great that you mention it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LordEragon05

You also might want to change the forum this post is posted in, you would have more luck in the Duolingo English forum, which you can do by editing your post.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Done! Thanks! ❤️

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Moon_and_Stars13

I don't really know what the Crimean Tatar language is. But im happy to help!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

I hope it appears soon on Duolingo so you can learn it here.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LordEragon05

A course cannot just appear on Duolingo, it has to have contributers, and a need of the actual language.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your advice. Me with colleagues are ready to be contributors and waiting for the Duolingo Incubator team to approve the application. The language is being endangered and needs this course.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/b05aplmun.ca

It also needs approval by Duolingo, which is not necessarily that easily gained.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

That's can be hard, so this discussion was made to unite contributors in the hope that Duolingo will notice it and thus approves it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/b05aplmun.ca

Judit has posted the established and official process for getting Duolingo's attention below.
I suggest you follow it.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your suggestion. ❤️ This discussion is the result of Judit's advice.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sinaver1991

Thanks for the iniative! We had numerously applied to create Crimean Tatar - Ukrainian course back in 2015. Unfortunely, since then there was no reply from the Duolingo Team.

I have given all of my 320 lingots to this post and the one in Ukrainian :)

Indeed, maybe with the forum there is a higher chance the Duo team will notice the request.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Sinaver, I see you've done the same great initiatives in 2015. ❤️

It's very kind of you to support this post with all lingots. :)

Bütün küç birlikte!

I honestly have absolutely No idea what Crimean Tatar is, but from the looks of the comments it sounds absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I'd gladly help contribute to the cause!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/MieyahhJay

Here's 5 lingots for good measures.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks a lot for your support! It inspires to move on! ❤️

Crimean Tatar language is on the edge of extinction- we do need to preserve it now by all means! Duolingo is the best - meaning fastest and easiest way to start doing it. I’m all in. Duolingo please pay attention to this!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Ann, thanks for your thoughts. ❤️ Unfortunately, the Crimean Tatar language extinction is quick.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

I love this idea. I wanted to learn Crimean Tatar very much, but because it is not on Duolingo had to start Turkish. I am all for creating Crimean Tatar course. Thank you for starting this thread. I would love to help!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

You are welcome, Ibrahim! Many Crimean Tatars followed the same way as you and there is hope that we will start building our native language course with you and all other contributors soon. Thanks for stepping in. ❤️

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Sevilia18

Will be so amazing if we manage to do this ! I believe in us❤️

Thank you for your support, Elvina! ❤️

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/islamismailov

I am dying to learn this language. Currently I am learning Turkish since Crimean Tatar is unavailable. If you can make Crimean Tatar Duolingo course happen, I would jump at the opportunity to learn it and help any way I can. I can also consider monetary help for the volunteers who create this course. Donated around 200+ lingots!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LordEragon05

If only I knew what the Crimean Tatar language was...

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

You are welcome to learn it as soon as it appears on Duolingo.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LordEragon05

Well, here is something that might help: https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/15014194   It's a post of all the languages that Duo hasn't added. Here is another link that might help: https://support.duolingo.com/hc/en-us/articles/204979660-How-can-I-suggest-a-new-language-course-

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tetrahedrons

Is the goal to have a Crimean Tatar for English speakers course, or do you just want a Crimean Tatar course? It might be easier to recruit volunteers for a Crimean Tatar for Russian speakers or Crimean Tatar for Ukrainian speakers.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your advice. ❤️ It would be great to have it for three pared languages: English, Ukrainian, and Russian. As outside of Ukraine and RF there are more Crimean Tatars, the English version would be the one that unites Crimean Tatar learners all over the world.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/thethirdSo

here are 84 lingots, cheers.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Wow, that's a lot. Thanks for your support! It motivates. ❤️

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Talienna

How many lingots you need here and in UA-CT request?

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your question. ❤️ Duolingo writes that they “monitor the forums and applications” for new languages to add and “encourage to make the request more popular and make it stand out more.” So, making the Crimean Tatar language request more popular and stand out more is the goal now.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/-Rusalina-

keep more lingots to support

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

we are happy to see your support again ❤️

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Here is a small update about the Crimean Tatar language. The Ukrainian government writes that a few days ago, it sent an official letter to Duo where it kindly asks to add Crimean Tatar to Incubator and is ready to provide comprehensive support, including required specialists.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/raw_stick

This would be a great opportunity to support the endangered language and culture of Crimean Tatars, both in their motherland and all over the world! Here are my 100 lingots and I will give more as I earn them!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Rostyslav, we appreciate your dedication on both discussions! ❤️

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lrtward

Giving lingots does not affect Duolingo's decision to create a course. Please read How does Duolingo decide which courses to add next? for more information.

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/LilyDist

I appreciate you and what you do, but you are a volunteer-moderator, so you need to provide us with clear messages. But your comment is misleading as, by the link you added, such statement as you write is absent. What Duolingo Help Center writes is that they “monitor the forums and applications” for new languages to add and “encourage to make the request more popular and make it stand out more.” Each discussion has several technical options to stand out more. Some of them are the number of supportive comments, votes, and Lingots. Saying about Lingots, they are can be given here to each Discussion and Comment. They visually show support to that Discussion or Comment: the more Lingots user gives, the more support it shares. As a result, these Comments or Discussions “stand out more.”

Great attitude. ❤️ We hope to get approved soon.

I would love to help! Here are 5 lingots! (I don't have a lot!)

Edit: I gave you 10 more lingots!

Edit: I gave you 25 in total. I gave you 10 more :)

    [deactivated user]

I cannot help right now, since I am not of age. Bummer. Well, I give my full support!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

We already appreciate the help you provide at your current age. :) Thanks a lot! ❤️

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/grant0s

I'm in full support! I think Duolingo has a responsibility to create courses for endangered languages, given all the resources and popularity they have. Question, would the course be in cyrillic or roman script?

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Glad to see that you share the support! ❤️ Nowadays, Crimean Tatar is officially using just roman script.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/raw_stick

Congratulations on getting your initiative onto the Guide! There is still a long way to go, but this is an important step!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

That is wonderful! ❤️ Happy to pass this way alongside with such soulmates!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/narkop___

      I support this!!!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/lizardsplay

I gave some lingots for course for Ukrainian speakers and some for your course :-) I've born in Kharkiv, spent many summers at Eupatoria (before 1999), but that's irrelevant. All languages shouldn't be endangered, every nation has right to their language :-) Good luck!

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

From colleagues and me, we thank you for your support of both discussions. ❤️ And some irrelevant info: I grew up in Eupatoria. :-)

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Gp8588

I am from Hong Kong and I am a great lover of Crimean Tatar history, art and culture. I would definitely support to have a Crimean Tatar course in Duolingo. Actually I am thinking about after I get my life established, I will just go to Crimea and live in Bakhchysarai or a town there with more Crimean Tatar population, for a period of time. I will just take course there and start speaking it with the locals. I think its the best way to learn the language.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

That's unbelievable to see such a gorgeous passion for the Crimean Tatar language from just another part of the world. ❤️

I am pretty sure soon your life will get better enough so you could go to the Crimea. And yes, you are right about ideal learning with native Crimean Tatar speakers in Bakhchisaray. You are not alone in your wish to come to Crimea now, and we hope that this course on Duolingo will make the pearl peninsula closer to all the world.

To participate, welcome to our Facebook group for testers where answer a few questions to enter, please. Currently, the number of testers needed is limited. Wish you to finish the course first!

We are creating the course thanks to the ASTEM Foundation, volunteers, great team members, and a piece of wonder. ❤️

For some reasons, I cannot use Facebook at the moment. But I will contribute 20 lingots here. Sending my best regards to the Team.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIMYOUNG

Thank you for the question. ❤️ There are several Tatar ethnicities. Besides Crimean Tatars, there are also Volga, Astrakhan, Lipka, and Siberian Tatars. You can identify better about which is his group by the place the man was born.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

Such a great idea to reinvent a wheel

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

Homo Soveticus if you know what I mean.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

If it was guaranteed that Duo would agree to add a course, I'd agree with you. But it's far from certain that they will add the course soon, or ever. Your choices might be your own app or nothing.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

I totally understand your pessimism. Yes, if we cannot go with Dualingo we should go some other way. But if there is even a small chance of success, it is worth trying to use this platform. I am sure there are many people who are ready to help to create this course, not just as voluntaries, but with donations too

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

:) Or nothing.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

I am sure there are many people who are ready to help to create this course, not just as voluntaries, but with donations too

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

Greetings from Kazan! I know that Crimean Tatar and Volga Tatar are different languages, but do you happen to know how closely they're related? Are Tatar speakers able to understand each other?

I'm more interested in learning Volga Tatar, for obvious reasons, but good luck with the course :-)

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Glad to see Kazan people here! Both languages are closely related but belong to different subgroups of the Kipchak languages family. So if slowly speaking, it's partially possible to understand one another, especially if you know other Kipchak languages family.

I hope your Tatar language will appear here too. Thanks for your support! ❤️

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Michael855818

I would love to see this but, unfortunately I feel like you may have to wait a long time, as there are multiple larger languages still on the waiting list. I wish Duolingo would just let all of these languages into the incubator, but apparently they want to introduce new languages at a gradual pace.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your wishes. ❤️ A few months ago, in celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day, Duolingo launched two endangered language courses: Navajo and Hawaiian. Both languages together have a fewer amount of native speakers than Crimean Tatar. All this gives all of us some hope to see our native languages here pretty soon.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

Both languages together have a fewer amount of native speakers than Crimean Tatar.

But they both are American (!) languages. ;)

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Yep, we understand. At the same time, there are thousands of Crimean Tatars who live in America. So this course would much support the mother tongue of US citizens.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

It's not simply a matter of letting languages into the incubator. There are staff resources involved in each new course and Duo simply can't immediately add all courses for which they have volunteers. There are also ongoing data storage costs. Duo are out to make a profit, so pragmatically they're going to prioritize courses that will bring them positive publicity (which is the rationale behind Hawaiian and Navajo) and attract a lot of new learners. Languages like Crimean Tatar probably do little enough for them that they'll always be losing money, so realistically I think the only chance it has is some form of sponsorship. Sorry for the pessimistic view.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your view! ❤️ The sponsorship is possible too, just more info needed how-to. We have a lot of organizations that can donate.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Tetrahedrons

I think you or one of the organizations that would be funding it would need to contact Duolingo directly to find that out.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your advice! ❤️ We are working on it to have contact asap.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/b05aplmun.ca

Even aside from all the other potential issues, a potential course needs not just a full team of volunteers, but highly-skilled volunteers. At a bare minimum, they need to be fully bilingual (at least as far as reading and writing goes) in the two languages in question and my understanding is that they look for other skills as well. Applications of potential team members - which I assume you have completed or are in the process of completing - need to demonstrate your skills in both languages and highlight any other relevant skills - like experience in teaching languages.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your advice. ❤️ We have already sent applications, and yes, we have bilingual master's degree linguists and interpreters aside with bilingual technicians.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/b05aplmun.ca

Well, you sound more organized than many other folks who have volunteered to contribute to work on languages.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Theron126

Indeed, I've seen hundreds of posts asking for languages, and plenty offering to volunteer, but this is probably the most impressive resume I've seen.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thank you. ❤️ Still, everything is yet to come.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

      Especially for you :)

      https://forum.duolingo.com/comment/34969181?comment_id=35073570

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/mortificator

Sorry, I'm a man of science. Why do we need those computers if we use them instead of a hammer? :D

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Thanks for your advice. ❤️ Besides waiting for Duolingo confirmation me with colleagues are also looking for IT-volunteers that are ready to help with building our app. Will see who will be first.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lrtward

Hello, I thought I'd weigh in here.

First of all, I love that this post is generating so much interest, activity, and support. That is absolutely fantastic!

However, I will not add this to the guide for two reasons:
      - It is not a request that Duolingo add a language, but a request for support of a specific team.
      - It utilizes links generated by Rebrandly, which has the ability track clicks and gather data.

Duolingo has a strict vetting process for selecting course contributors, and the simple act of trying to pre-form a team without Duolingo staff involvement suggests that there may be problems with authority on the part of some of the team members. It's fine to encourage people to apply to be contributors, but the creation of the team needs to rest firmly in Duolingo's hands.

The tracking links seem sneaky and underhanded and feel like an invasion of privacy. Had they been announced openly and fully disclosed I might feel differently, but they were not.

If someone wants to create a discussion asking that the Crimean Tatar language be considered as one of Duolingo's offerings, and explaining why they feel it's a good candidate (cool script, rich history, endangered, opens doors to a culture that is special because __, etc.) then I will be delighted to add THAT request to the guide. The request can contain a link to the Incubator and/or the Application forum but it should be a direct link, not a tracking link.

I think this is a great idea, and I'd love to see the language added to the guide. I just want to make sure we do it in such a way that we don't jeopardize our chances right out of the gate.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/hanzbrow

First of all, I am just a volunteer, who speaks for himself only.

I think there is a little misunderstanding here. This post was created because we want to see Crimean Tatar course on Duolingo and it seemed natural that the first step should be making an announcement here to see the level of support from Duolingo community. I believe it is very clear to everyone that Duolingo will form a team and decide who can contribute and who shouldn't. Also I am sure that there was neither intention to pre-form a team behind your back nor to create problems with authority.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

      Ibragim, teşekkür etemiz. ❤️

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Hello! Thanks for your detailed comment. We have fixed the reasons you have mentioned. If it fits, please, add it to your guide discussion. If not, just let us know what to fix. Thanks in advance! ❤️

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Lrtward

Thank you for being so understanding, I really appreciate it. It's easy for the written word to come off more harshly than intended, and I was worried how my comment would be received.

Please make it clear that this is only a discussion requesting support for Duolingo to add the Crimean Tatar language, not a group ready to take ownership of the course. Phrases like "We are the volunteers that are ready to help with adding the endangered Crimean Tatar language to Duolingo." and "Who is also ready to contribute?" are misleading. Can you please re-think the phrasing?

I do not want to put words in your mouth - you can phrase it any way you like, but here is a suggestion: "I have volunteered to help with adding the endangered Crimean Tatar language to Duolingo." and "Who is also ready to support the creation of this course?" or "Who is also ready to support the addition of this language to Duolingo?"

Make it clear that you are an individual who has volunteered, and ask for support for the language (you can't hint that people will be allowed to contribute; that is out of your control).

Also there are still some links to az-dot-qirimca-dot-org. If you could be so kind as to remove them, it would be appreciated. I noticed them in comments such as "Anfisa, thanks for supporting us on both discussions" and "Rostyslav, we appreciate your dedication on both discussions!" but there may be more. While you're editing, you should change those to "I appreciate..." instead of "We appreciate...".

I should also explain that Duolingo has recently had problems in other forums with people trying to form "clubs" and "groups" and it led to a lot of controversy and upset, and took up a lot of moderators' and staff time. So it is important to be clear that you can only represent yourself, and ask others to lend support. I cannot speak for staff, but I personally feel that comments like "We hope to get approved soon." would be received better if they said "I hope to get approved soon". I know moderators are edgy about any "group talk" and I suspect staff have a similar mindset.

      https://www.duolingo.com/profile/QIRIM.YOUNG

Hello! Thanks for your detailed answer again. The concerns you have mentioned are adjusted. If it satisfies you, please, add it to your guide discussion. If not, just write what to change. Thanks in advance! ❤️

      Great thanks! ❤️

Thank you so much for responding to this thread. I am an individual living in the United Stated along with my wife and a new baby. We are of Crimean Tatar descent but unfortunately have little opportunity to learn and practice our language. My wife and I are regular users of Duolingo (German and Turkish courses for myself and French for my wife). I am very excited to see (and contribute) to Crimean Tatar course once it's approved.

I will be also checking out the "Tinycards" by Duolingo since it will be a good start to build a frequency based vocabulary list.

I think there are a group of volunteers who are desperate to create a learning platform for our youth to keep practicing our native tongue. I don't think they mean to "own" the course, and we can make sure the volunteers selected for building the course are real people, distributed across the globe and without an incentive to "own" it, rather contribute and help it improve. It's similar situation to Irish Gaelic, where the language is slowly disappearing. But its usage hopefully can get re-ignited with help of Duolingo!

Another good reason to add this course is that the language is similar in "base characteristics" to Turkish: it's in the same language family and mutually intelligible to a certain extent. I think this could mean less cost of technical support on Duolingo's part.

Learn a language in just 5 minutes a day. For free.
