sh, the lenited s in Gaelic, has the same sound as h /h/, so do shùil sounds /də huːl’/.

(but beware, after the article an s is lenited to t-s /t/ instead, eg. an t-sùil /ən tuːl’/ the eye)

AFAIK It's a silent 's' thanks to the lenition, caused by 'do'.

Surely others can explain it more eloquently than that. :)
