no credit for strengthening skill

Sometimes when I have strengthened a skill (answered all questions w/o losing all hearts), DL does not award me the skill and I have to go back and do it all over again. Frustrating! This has happened a number of times. Is there a reason for this or is it a computer glitch?

Hi gmhewitt,

It is not a glitch. Sometimes you need to practice a skill several times before it will strengthen depending on how far decayed various words are and if you are encountering all of the weak words when you practice. You will sometimes need to practice multiple times to strengthen the skill. I went through practice 5 times once before it would strengthen. So, don't give up!

Thanks. I feel better now.

That's incredibly annoying when you strengthen lessons as soon as they decay. Especially when the exercises are 20+ questions long. "Strengthening" used to be more targeted. Duolingo also used to communicate experiments and changes better.

I often use the Timed Practice and sometimes only get 2 or 3 answers correct before my time is up, but still the skill is strengthened. Another advantage I find with Timed Practice is that you don't lose hearts for wrong answers, so if the sentence is too long to type in, I just type fjfjfj and hit Continue. Of course I get a wrong answer, but I don't lose seconds.

I can't stand seeing the little clock ticking down, so I don't do timed practice. On the other hand, if the skill be strengthened for just a couple questions' time, it might be worth doing. Thank you!

You get used to it. Each correct answer adds more time to the clock. Also, don't bother with caps, punctuation marks or accents and the typing will go much more quickly.

I had the same problem three times in a row yesterday. I was shown the xp progress with fanfares but later I noticed that I had not got the xp. In every case my network connection was not very stable but I used two different networks so blaiming just the connection might be a bit daring for I have never before noticed dissapearing xp. On the other hand, I have earlier used mainly good quality connections. Is the timeout long enough for xp registration in the iPad app?

@omauno, this sounds like a different problem. gmhewitt is talking about whether a skill shows that it has been strengthened, which is different from xp.

The only time I've had xp go missing was when I needed to refresh the page (This used to happen frequently and it would usually take either refreshing the page and/or refreshing the page and waiting up to 15 minutes) or when i exited a lesson/practice session before completing it and having the points graph pop up.
