Does this mean 'A number wins as in a lottery' in that case 'a certain number wins' or does it mean 'A certain number of people win' as in a sports trial, in that case ' A certain number win' is correct because THEY win?
As it comes from "vinco, vincere, vici, victus", "to conquer", I would assume the second, if not both.
