Isn't a piece of jewelry the same as uma joia in the singular?

I'm not sure how it is in English. I put down "jewel", which seemed like the easiest way to write it in singular form.

It would have to be ¨a piece of jewelry¨ otherwise, because saying ¨a jewelry¨ is really strange. I went with ¨a jewel¨ as well.
