Speaking German in Bosnia

Today, I had my first real experience speaking real German.... and I wasn't even in a German speaking country!

I work for a company in Bosnia (and Herzegovina ;) ) that requires me to escort contractors onto company sites for various reasons. Today, for the first time, a contracted employee was fluent in German! I had a pleasant conversation with him about beer, his children, and the beautiful women in the area ;). I was surprised by my ability to converse with him, as this was my first time even SPEAKING the language outside of trying to annoy my family. One thing that I had trouble with was understanding him, as German sounds utterly strange with a Bosnian accent. I kept having to ask him to repeat what he said. For example, in Serbo-Croatian (Bosnia's official language, called Bosnian), all "R's" are spoken the same way as in Spanish, much like a "D" or with a roll. Some other words, like "m├Ądchen," sounded to me like "martshen," which was a bit of an obstacle. All in all, I would say that it was a pleasant and interesting conversation, considering my (and possibly his) limited vocabulary.

I have an American friend that lives here in Bosnia who speaks fluent German, but have not had the time to talk to her or her boyfriend (an Austrian native) at all. I will be sure to let you guys know how that conversation goes.

I completed Duolingo's German tree, and started using Babbel's review manager to expand my vocabulary (RIP Vocabulary Tab). With my Babble vocabulary list, my combined word count is 2,274 words, some of which include words that I have not quite mastered yet.

In ex-jugoslav countries, Germany played a large role in their history, so you will find a larger percentage of the older population speak german than english

yep, i noticed quite a lot of german-esque or german influenced things on my trip to croatia last week
