  • "in the south of Geneva" = you're still in Geneva in the southern part of it
  • "south of Geneva" = not in Geneva but some place south of it

Thank you indeed! Now to recapitulate: "In the south of Geneva" = "Dans le sud de Genève" while
"South of Geneva" = "Au sud de Genève"
