Duo's character needs some motion
The character should fly, jump, run or anything else than just being a static picture. What do you think about it?
I really loved it in the new test center video when Duo was flapping its wings and flying... that was adorable.
If it has motion, it will encourage more people to actually try and they might tell their friends about it and then duolingo will be popular
Sure, they must add a bouncing Duo, because otherwise they will remain as ”unknown” and ”unpopular” as they tend to be now.
Do you really think people will say to their friends ”Go to that site, they have such a funny bird.” instead of ”Go there, they have such a variety of languages that you can learn/practice for free.”?
I don't want to sound mean, it's just that you message made me smile.
And to answer the original post:
Where and when would you like the moving character to appear?
- If it appears too often, it might get boring/annoying to some people.
- But if it appears let's say only when you finish a tree, then you would only enjoy it for a couple of moments, and maybe the effort put into animating it wouldn't be worth it.
I agree with psionpete, we should all focus more on the actual learning and less on coming here just for the sake of playing and having fun.
a dancing owl after you finish a full lesson, and for french it would be nice to have an owl flying around the Eiffel tower :D
Duo wearing a different outfit and doing something different (Interacting with each of the language icons like the pyramid for every 5-10 skills you complete! :D
It could be course specific, like the French would be painting or miming or something like that. The Portuguese owl does a samba dance etc.
Every course shows its own symbol for its country - the Eiffel tower for French, the Statue of Liberty for English etc. - What about an animation with Duo who is incorporated with these course symbols after you have finished your tree? Seeing it after completing a skill would be nuts... The ideas could be endless =)
If you mean the owl then it could be interesting BUT I would like to see some other features delivered first, like the Vocabuary (words) function which is currently under test, and some standardisation between features between all media I.e the web, iOS and Android apps plus plus lots of other possible improvements suggested in this and other forums.
A moving owl could be fun but please let's get our priorities in order.
In fairness, chances are pretty slim that the purpose who'd be illustrating a moving owl would be the same person that would be programming the core functionality of the site. Graphic design/artist is usually not the same staff member as the sort of programmer who'd be handling functions on a site that has to serve a userbase this large.
I'm only pointing it out because I've had the experience of seeing people react with OUTRAGE at something small and fun being developed when there were more critical and complicated things that needed done... but the problem was that the person doing the small and fun thing was a staff member who didn't have the technical background to work on the more critical stuff and was trying to do something helpful and learn... and got chewed out really bad by the userbase for it.
Since Duolingo's objective is learning meanwhile you get fun, then fun must be imperative!
