What is the difference in usage between ''rud sam bith'' and ''càil''?

I think "rud sam bith" means "anything" (ex : chan eil rud sam bith agam = I don't have anything) (chan eil obair sam bith agam = I don't have any work), and càil means "nothing", but I don't remember if we use the negative or the positive form with càil.
